  • Crazy setup change - fantastic results

I've always struggled with a push shot. I've worked forever trying to understand why. I concluded it was because I was hitting the ball with an open clubface but whatever I did, I couldn't correct it. It was all very frustrating.

As an experiment I tried moving my hands back about 6 inches at setup. It looks crazy and a few people are saying stuff like - "I don't know how you
can hit the ball ?" - It's like an opposite to a forward press.

The results have been amazing !

My whole swing feels 100% better !
I'm in the correct position at the top, the club isn't open anymore. I feel more balanced and my shots are powerfull and straight. I've started hitting a controlled fade, a shot I could never do.

I've hit 37 fairways on the trot over the last few rounds and a gross 72 on Sunday in the Medal. My Dad who is an expert on my swing says my new setup looks strange but I don't "twist my hands" like I used to.

    I hope it lasts !

That is odd...........i always that when i press i can draw easier....and when i play my hands in the back.....the ball comes off left ( im a lefty). Whatever works though.

push shots happen because you start your downswing with your body and let your arms and club lag behind. I used to be told that I must have an open clubface to get that result, so I focused on releashing my wrist, and I did just that to early and next thing you know big hooks came out of it.

I read an article by David Leadbetter which explained this, His solution start your downswing by whipping your arms down and pulling the club through to impact with your left side. Just before impact you releash your right side and hit the ball as hard as you can.

I have tried this and it works keeping the club on plane and getting straight and long shots.

As I say in my downswing drill, start the downswing with the lower body. The lower body will turn the upper body, which will set the arms in motion. Hold the arms at the top as long as you can, drop your right elbow to your right hip and accelerate through the ball.
