  • Drives All Over The Place!

I hit my irons as straight as an arrow but I have been hitting my drives left and right off the tee! Can someone please give me a drill or a tip to help a little with my problem.

    Hi David,

You could be suffering several problems........

Firstly left and right off the tee could be shoulders open, feet closed causing you to flip your wrists on some shots and not others, hence left and right.

Secondly you may be just trying to hard with the "big dog", try just working on the same rhythm as your iron swing.

Finally if you are comfortable that you set up square and the correct distance from the ball then you may be just a little to flat on the backswing and comming to far inside at attack. Check your swing plane, if you plane is to inside you may also notice you irons are not to good out of the rough due to the hosel catching the long grass first.

    Hope this helps

    Ian.

Agree with you again Ian !

On the backswing make sure you get good width (low and slow) and keep your hands in front of you. Dont let the backswing get too flat with the longer clubs

On the downswing try and think about swinging the club around yourself more and keep your upper body and head behind the ball at impact. This will make sure you release the club properly and dont leave the face open. A good drill is to put yourself in the perfect finish position and then just try and swing the club there (forgetting about the ball)

I know a good carpenter never blames his tools, but this could be a shaft flex issue as well. It sounds like you could have a bit stiffer shaft to help out your accuracy problem if you are able to hit all your irons straight. You could also try adding a bit of weight to your woods to help slow your clubhead speed down which will give you back a bit of control.
