  • The Shanks

After a recent lesson where I was told to use my hands more to cock the wrists, everything was fine until a week ago when I started shanking, slicing and hitting it 45 degrees to the right on every club from 5 iron to PW.

I have videoed myself to see what the problem is and it seems that i am way too far inside and my wrist cock is pretty poor (even though i am trying to cock them more)

Looks awful. But i don;t understand why that would case the shanks and also I always fade??

    Any ideas?

One thing I tried was to have less body in the shot, so i started down with my hands which seemed to work, that is why i filmed myself with driver on the first. The other clip is a nice shank with the PW before any change.

Your using your hands as the first move. Don't use/set/cock/hinge them until you get the club parallel to the ground. Use your shoulder turn only first to where you get your back to the target and your left shoulder is over your right knee. Then use your hands as aggressively as you want.

I've recently found myself inthe same situation following lessons to cure a bad hook and have noticed an improvement since trying the right hand drill - soon to be the golfing equivalent of the Atkins diet!

The positive of being so poor from the tee at present means I really have had to drastically improve my putting.

If you're slicing as well as shanking, it seems that you are coming from ouside to in. Cocking the wriusts is obviously necessary but you still have to come down on an in-to-out path. Having said this, don't swing back too flat in an effort to achieve this! I know from experience that when concentrating on a specific thing during the swing it is very easy to forget to shift your weight to the left first.

your shanks are cause by taking your club to far inside and over rotating your hands. The down swing comes inside and you cannot close the clubface intime and hit the ball with the hosle. If you do hit it with club face you will have and major push to the right and then continue to slice even more right. To fix this problem you need to move everything away at the same time.

Check out on your video when your club if facing away from the target and parralle to your target line it is pionting to the ground, at this point the club should also be parralle to the ground and your target line.

well after 36 holes had 2 shanks only - both with wedges and both on 18.

Much happier. Now taking club back on plane, and also not breaking wrists until past parallel!
