  • My Swing & first post :)

Hello from Indiana everyone. This is my first posting in this forum. Nice place. I liked the video /photo gallery, very nice.

Well, I was hoping I could get some comments on my swing.

Sorry, I am not hitting a ball, just working on my swing. They start off in regular speed, but then there is a 2nd slow motion section.

    Thanks
    Bryan

          Alrighty.

Here are 2 swing angles from today. Yep, not quite like my apartment swing, still fighting coming over the top. I have a couple of drills I am working on.

            Hi Bryan,

Firstly some good quality recording equiptment, just viewed both shots.

From behind you are just on the "inside" plane line going back, this is no problem as you more than make up for it on the way through with a picture perfect impact.

The face on picture looks like a wedge/short iron, however there is a slight overswing at the top, due to a big shoulder turn I think more than a swing fault.

At a guess you are a very low h/capper definatly below 5 with this swing, however if you are not I suggest you improve on your short game because there is nothing wrong with you long game.

There is no over the top action, just a change in direction due to the turning of the shoulders, this tends to make the club kick out back on the correct plane from the slight overswing.

            Very good swing

            Ian.

From the side, one small thing that might make a big difference: You mentioned your feel of over the top, and that does appear to be slight. This is being caused by your right arm getting disconnected from the body at the top, and allowing an over-rotation. Keep the arms inside the shoulder planes. You will think you are not able to take the club back as far, restricting your long length of arc, but staying connected throughout the swing keeps you from letting the arms take over.

Another item to be picky, that may or may not be what you are trying to work on, but needs a mention:
Your hands are not setting fully. This may have been due to the cold, you playing a lower flight (knockdown), but if you stay connected as I said in the first part, and you do what you are doing now with the hands, you will notice this even more. If you look at the posoition of the hands and club shaft when your arms are behind you comming down, they are already partly released. You will need to fully cock the hands going up, and maintain this position at the top, and about 1/2 way down, letting them finaly release last at the ball. This will get you a lot more power, hight and spin that you irons will love.

              Hope this helps.

                Hey Greg,

Yea, the 'holding the angle' on the downswing has always been an issue for me.

I see the pro's on television from the side literally have the shaft just off their shoulders (from the viewing of it) almost till their hands are waist high, whereas I have already started 'casting' the club, even though its not really casting.

I just have never been able to hold that angle. I am working on a couple drills that will hopefully help me. I am working when I get to the top of my backswing, firing my hits to clear them and allowing my arms to 'drop' down to my side while trying to keep my right elbow glued to my right hip.

I would rather over exaggerate right now, then under exaggerate.

Re: My Swing & first post

Well it certainly seems fluid though much quicker than my swing. 3 things to consider:

                  1) What's you weight distribution like? I got the impression the weight is more towards your heels rather than towards the balls of your feet.

                  2) Is your right hand a bit on the weak side? At address your right forearm is higher than your left, which changes the swing plane (out to in)

                  3) Maintaining the angle in the right arm. Try the the old "towel under the armpits" routine. Make a strap with velcroe fasteners and just practice swinging from the top only.

Having said that, I woouldn't play your for too much money.

                    Currently, I am a 2.2 index. About 2 years ago, I was a +2.

Anyways, thanks for the info. Here is something you might find interesting I did last night.

Its a comparison of me and Tiger at address and impact position. The swing is from my apartment.
