  • Shaft alignment

In a recent post Greg Hutton noted that at set up your club shaft should be an extention of your left arm. I recently read Jack Nicklaus' book "My Golden Lessons" where this is also emphasized. So, as a beginner, I have an observation and two questions. The observation is that as I watch the set up of many tour professionals (Tiger included) I see that they often set up with a slight bend in their left wrist rather than with the flat wrist that would result from the "shaft extention on the arm" set up. I can understand this for the driver, it would keep the hands behind the ball. However, I also see this with the irons for many pros.

Question 1. I've been told you should have only one set-up and change the ball position to suit the club. It looks like the pros do both, is that true?

Question 2. With the "shaft extension of the arm" set up the shaft is necessarily tilted forward toward the target. It seems this would effectively reduce the loft of the club compared to if the shaft was aligned with the center of your body. Do manufacturers design clubs for the "center alignment" or the "shaft as an extention alignment?"

Thanks for helping clear this up
