refiner vs medicus

Looking at the swing aids any suggestions the refiner or the medicus, refiner 5 iron and driver goes for the same price as the medicus 5 iron.

I have the Medicus dual-hinge 5 Iron. After taking a quick look at the refiner, I see that it is single-hinge design. Medicus also offers/offered a single hinge trainer. The difference is going to be the number of break points in your golf swing.

Refiner is junk. Had both, threw the refiner away. Medicus all the way.

I totally disagree. One of my friends purchased the medicus 5 iron last year and it is a good swing aid. I received the refiner as a christmas present this past December and it has done wonders for my swing. I'm striking the ball great, but more importantly I now understand the how and why of my swing. It didn't happen overnight. However, the more I worked with it, everything just started to fall in place. Plus, I'm now winning a good portion of the wagers from the same guys I've played with for the last 7 years. I've swung the medicus and it is a fine piece of equipment but so is the refiner. I don't think you can go wrong with ither club. Oh, by the way, the refiner is cheaper.

If someone had given me a Refiner, then I would not have an issue with it. The Refiner only works on a single "hinge", the medicus has several hinges and will catch more of your problems in the various stages of your swing than the refiner will. That is one reason the Medicus costs more. it has a more complex "hinge. Have had my medicus for about 4 years and the hinge system has yet to wear out. it has done hundreds of hours on the range from me and my friends. The 5 iron holds up and just works. Best $150.00 I spent. I think the 5-iron is cheaper now. I don't buy refiners claim that medicus hinge is prone to wearing out faster

But both are better than a non-hinge swing trainer. I would say the biggest thing either will teach you is a to slow down your back swing. Slow, slow, slow is what either will put into your swing.

That is an unequivocal yes - they both do the same thing. Do not be fooled by the "dual hinge" vs the "single hinge" argument from most Medicus owners.

The Medicus does have another break point - in the same direction! (2nd hinge does nothing but to make for a more full turn) - the dual hinge was just a great marketing ploy. Pure genius.

Don't get me wrong though - I LOVE the Medicus, have seen huge results in my own game, and bring it to the course. After I hit a bad shot, I swing it a few times to get back on track.

Our customers love both trainers. See following info drawn from my store's sales:

Our online store sells far more of the Refiner pro products (70% refiner to 30% medicus), w/ high customer satisfaction. I attribute this to the lower price of the Refiner.

Our mortar and brick store sells the reverse (80% Medicus to 20% Refiner). This is most likely due to customer familiarity. Unless you are internet-savvy, you most likely have not heard of the Refiner.


To make a short story long, you won't go wrong with either. Save some bucks (but some "risk" in a lesser-known product), or go with the well-known brand name.

I agree grooveitgolf. Not to beat a dead horse but I noticed the same thing from the medicus infomercial, the different break points with the dual hinge are the same break points with the single hinge. Believe me I know because when I first started swinging the refiner I had a swing flaw just about everywhere and the refiner would let me know at each phase of the swing. Anyway, as I said before, they are both good products and I always carry my refiner with me whether at the range or on the golf course. The hinge concept is really what's in question and it is definitely valid.

I bought the Refiner and I think it's junk. The main difference is the design of the hinge. The Refiner requires you to adjust tiny hex screws on each side to the shaft to adjust when the hinge breaks. It's finiky and requires adjustment all the time. Also the actual hinge design itself is very weak and impossible to fix if (when) it breaks. Mine broke and I was sent a new one with no questions asked, so their customer service is good (just to be fair). The DVD that comes with the refiner is a bit amaturish if you ask me. You can't really hit balls that well with it (at least I couldn't and that's how I broke the first one).

I re-gifted the replacement one for an office Christmas gift so it worked out in the end!

The Medicus has a much better design for the hinge. You can see the design o each if you search the US patent office for the design registrations.

Interesting?? I've had mine a year now and can't say enough good things about it. Used it all year (yes, hitting balls) and the hinge is just fine. Also, in my most recent post about goals set for 2005, I talk about reaching the 3 goals I had set for myself
1) Shooting below 40 (a 38), my previous best had been a 41 a few years ago.
2) Consistently shooting 40-42 (That was the norm this summer).
3) Conquering hole #6 on my home course (improved over 70%).

I'm sorry you didn't find the Refiner to your liking but for me I'm 100% satisfied and always have it in my bag.

I just read your post again and need clarification. Lets start with the hinge breaks and adjustments. The tool to adjust the hinge is to help you depending on how much help your swing might need. For example, I have the hinge adjusted so if I have the slightess flaw in my swing then the hinge will break ( thats what its supposed to do). Others knowing their swing need work can adjust it so it will not break unless there is a major flaw in the way they presently swing the club. Again, this is why you have a tool to adjust the hinge. Its for your convenience, so no matter what your level of swinging the club you can get immediate feedback as to what improvements you need to make. Its not to fix the hinge because or when it breaks. If you you were constantly making adjustment with the hinge then your swing has flaws and these were the areas you needed to work on. By the way, I'm trying to get my friend with the Medicus to sell it to me ( I would love to have both) since he doesn't use it. Unfortunately, although he paid his money for it, he doesn't see how it's breaking during his swing is a benefit and how this will help him improve his game (Unbelievable). Anyway, both clubs if used the way they were intended will help anyones game if they will just get themselves out of the way and let the training aid do what it was made to do.

I tried it a few times and I guess I didn't give it enough time. What turned me off was the hinge breaking. If you look at the hinge and where it attaches to the shaft of the club, there is a torx bolt that holds the hinge to the shart. The bolt came loose but due to the way the hinge is designed it can't open enough to allow you to tighten the loose bolt. I had to return the old one and get a replacement. All I did was hit a few balls. If the thing is that weak…

Hello every one!

I've bought refiner and tried it today (I decided refiner over medicus after reading this thread) Not bad! I'm a total beginner and it gave me some good shots. Some more practice and all I need is consistent straight 200 yards. Not 350, just 200. For now

Video (that comes with it) is a must. My partner tried without video and it didn't help him much.

I may buy a 5 iron dual hinge medicus soon. To have both refiner and medicus.

Btw is it supposed to break and the very end of swing? I break mine when I hit my back, but sometime I don't. I know, stupid question....
