  • Stiffer Shaft Helps Slices?

I have an Adams tight lies GT TI driver with a stiff shaft and 9 degrees of loft.

I almost always slice (considerably) this club if I try to swing harder than maybe 60 percent.

Could this be caused by a shaft that is not stiff enough. The shaft is a Graffaloy stiff. It feels really rubbery to me, but I just thought it was because of the length.

I can swing my Taylormade 200 steel 3-wood pretty much as hard as I want and as long as I don't lay the club off, the ball goes straight or righ-to-left. I typically fly this club 215-220 yards. The driver goes about that far with a limited-speed swing (if it goes straight), but I feel like I should get more out of it.

    What do you think?

    Driver shaft

    Hi jspivey,

This generally means the opposite. If the shaft is too stiff the ball will tend to have a left to right flight on it, and if the shaft is too weak then you will tend to get a hook from it. It may be that you will do better with a slightly weaker shaft. The Graffaloy shafts tend to come out a bit stiffer than other shafts, but this is not always the case. Different shafts perform differently in various heads. So try out both a stiffer and weaker shaft - at the end of the day it is the one that perform the best and it doesn´t matter what it has written on the shaft!

There could be another reason for the slice. If you are coming across the ball slightly and getting the occasional slice with your 3 wood then this will only be exagerated with the driver, especially a 9 degree stiff shafted driver. Look into it a bit more making sure that you are not laying the club off. REMEMBER the bad shots are exagerated a lot with the driver.
