  • Tempo...

    Hey,
I was just wondering if there was any tempo drills to help me. I love my swing and when It's on, well lets say I don't worry about anything. So are there any tempo drills out there??

Tempo.. you simply cannot underestimate it. I find sometimes my backswing gets too slow as I think 'low and slow' and I then have to rush on the way down

Once I start swinging the club back with enough speed for it to feel as if the club sets itself at the top, then momentum causes the club to change direction and the downswing is effortless. Too fast and its wrong

Its one of my elusive holy grails !

Righty if you find any let me know as i was just about to post the same question. I used to have a nice rhythmic swing but for some reason my backswing is now a million miles an hour and i decelarate on my follow through. If it wasnt for just renewing my membership the clubs would be in the shed. I spent three and a half hours on the practice fairway Friday got it all sorted was one over the card after 12 holes Saturday and then out of the blue wenrt back to the same garbage i was playing the week before. I finished 6 over on the last 6 holes and still cannot work out why i could not hit an iron on the last 6 holes. I have tried everything and am now lost. I have a lesson on Tuesday an i know exactly what my pro will tell me but for some reason my brain cannot get my body to do what it wants. I will watch this post with much interest.

        Re: Tempo...

It depends on your personal tempo. every person has a different tempo. Tempo is what we use to keep good timing in our swing. For some they need a fast tempo and others need a slower tempo. a good drill is counting, I used to say 1001, 1002, 1003. 1001 was to my takeaway, 1002 was top of swing and 1003 was impact postion. for different tempos you can change how and what you count. I know a golf pro who uses a metronome, it goes tick tick tick, he has it set to his personal tempo, and you never hear the impact tick because that is when you hear his club hit the ball.

Has anyone tried the Leadbetter traing aid "Swing Setter"? It says it will help with your tempo...

I disagree - there is no timing in golf. Timing is all about connecting correctly to a moving target such as the ball in tennis, cricket and baseball etc. In golf the ball is stationary. What matters in golf is applying the club face correctly on the ball and doing this involves a few technical movements done in an ordered manner, so it's sequential and not a timing action.

              Re: Tempo...

pgmetcalf, I understand what you are saying. Timing to you is when you need to start your swing, in a game of tennis or cricket if you start you swing to late or to early you will not get correct contact.

But look at the timing I'm talking about, just one part of timing is your releash. an early(timing) releash can close the clubface causing a pull or a hook, while a late (timing) releash can leave the clubface open causing a push or a slice.

doing the correct sequence in the right time cause your your club to swing on a correct swing plane and get maxium results from your shot.

If you are still in doubt answer this question, if it's not timing why do we need tempo?

This is going to be an ugly discussion !

My view here is that the correct Tempo produces good timing naturally. If you move all your body parts at the right speed the club face hits the ball squarely and at maximum velocity. Too slow or too fast and the club face isnt square and power is lost

Tempo Rythmn, timing whatver you want to call it .. it's the essential element of a good swing sequence .. taken me a long time to realise it

You definitely need timing in your swing. If your hips, shoulders and arms aren't moving at the same rate, the result is going to be UGLY!!!
