  • Wrist Hinge/Unhinge - Downswing

I'm getting back into golf after a 15-yr absence. It's going fairly
well but I'm struggling with the idea of a "late hit". I've taken
some lessons and have discovered that I'm hinging my wrists
correctly on the backswing but when I swing to the ball, I
often break my wrists early and either lose power or hit a
    fat shot.

I've tried a variety of drills including splitting my hands and
putting a tee-peg in the bottom end of the grip etc., but
haven't had much luck. Granted, it's only been a week or two
and I'm sure this takes time but much of what I've read says
things like "try to feel like your hands are dropping straight
down" or "it should feel like you're pulling the club handle cap
    towards the ball" etc.

I guess I don't "feel" any of this. Maybe it will come with time
but right now, it feels akward and I feel like the more I work on
it, the more it feels like I'm getting wristy or I'm casting the club.

Any suggestions or should I just stay the course and understand
that it take time to make changes like this?

    Thanks very much - Andy

    Andy,

Try this drill that helped me. Take about a 7-iron and take the backswing only back to about the 3 o'clock position parallel with the ground, do this slowly, then make the swing forward concentrating on letting the hands get to the ball before the clubhead makes contact. Give it a chance and work on it everytime you go to the driving range and it will make a difference. It really helps with getting the feel of the correct contact point.

Thanks Bradyweb for the suggestion. It sounds similar to one I've seen where you work on forming the "L" shape during the backswing and swing (when swinging about halfway). I'll give it a try and thanks again.
