  • Distance issues w/ Irons...

I have read so much on people questioning their distance, and i hate to beat a dead horse but i think my issue is a little different. When i hit driver most people that i play with cant even come close to me in distance. On average i hit 305yds- 310yds. I'm very satisfied. But when it comes to my irons, im usally hitting one club behind my fellow players. For instance 150yds is a hard eight iron 135yds is hard nine. 60degree wedge is good for about 60yds max. I dont understand why. I have good control with all clubs (execept my putter... not enough room to get into that) but max distance is lacking. any ideas???

    Lacking distance? I'll pull a 7i from 150 out.

Now, up until recently, I had the same kind of distances you talk about with the Big Stick - up around 300.

The main difference is that I overswung wildly with my driver, and held the clubface open with a baseball-like swing. This got my driver swing speed (SS) up to 110-115 MPH.

Now I've moved towards the 'one swing' theory, using the same kind of swing with all my clubs.

As for your distance: Assuming that both you and your playing partners have sound golf swings, the answer is that they may be more flexible and/or strong than you.

I'm very limited with my flexibility I can barely get my arms past 9:00 on my backswing. This limits the amount of clubhead speed I can generate. (That said, my driver SS is still ~ 95 MPH). Yes, I've lost some distance with my driver.

Now, if you're using the same swing off the tee and off the deck, then it's not entirely unreasonable that it could be an equipment issue.

My first (and best) guess, however, is that you're using 2 different swings for your driver and your irons. I'm sure you don't swing nearly as agressively with your irons as you do with your driver - this would certainly account for the discrepancy.

Are you taking divots with your irons? If you are not, that is why you are hitting the distances you are. If you strike down on the ball you will gain an extra club.
