  • Beginner with fundamental problems

I have just started playing golf three weeks ago. I was making strides until today, where I took a step backwards. Everytime I hit the ball with a driver, it slices wide to the right. I also seem to have problems following through. I feel that part of the problem is that I am 6'4" and are using standard size clubs. I have problems getting under the ball with irons. How do you suggest a tall person like myself to compensate for my height in order to be a comfortable distance from the ball while in a comfortable position? Right now, I cant seem to get a fluid wide arch on my shot, and it feels like I am straining my back, even though I am following the lessons.

Also, and this may seem silly, but in keeping my head down throughout my swing, I have a difficult time finding my ball in the air. Any tips to spotting my ball after contact?

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Hi David,

First thing you must do is take some lessons with a local pro, from your thread you are starting off on the wrong foot.

Being 6ft 4' will make a little difference which your pro will go through with you, however you say that you have trouble "getting under the ball", first thing to think about is you hit down on the ball not under it.

    Good Luck

    Ian.

It's important to be comfortable over the ball and if your clubs are too short then that will affect it. However, much more important is to get your swing in order, so follow the advice to see a good pro to set you on the right track. I don't think anyone has ever been able to learn a sound golf swing by just reading about it. Perhaps I'm wrong about that and if so I stand corrected but I have never seen it myself.

The lenght and lie angle of your clubs will depend on your build (eg length of your arms) not just your height. Starting out is by far the best time to get properly fitted, there are quite a few people subscribing to this forum who could either do that or advise on where to get it done.
