at times I am puzzled by extreme inconsistency in distance with my irons. for instance, I will hit what appears to be a beautiful pitching wedge from, let's say, 115 yards out, only to have it come up 20 yards short. Another time, that same shot may airmail the green by 20 yards. What gives????

PCS Class 'A' Clubfitter
A new highlight: Golfing the home course on Christmas Day.
I say it too often: If it's golf club shaped, you can play with it.
For the record, I'm a club doctor, not a swing doctor.
Re: distance control
Assuming you're pretty new to golf, chances are your swing is changing strike-to-strike; and this is causing your distance change.
