    Re: backspin

We have talked about backspin on a number of occasions here.

    1. Keep your grooves clean
    2. Have clean contact with the ball
    3. Hit with a crisp, descending blow

      Re: backspin

What kind of shots do you normally hit to get on the green? If your shots land on the green and have so much forward momentum that they are rolling/boncing past, then would a less punchy shot or hitting a higher elevation or hitting the near end of the green have some help?

      Disclaimer : I'm a beginner :P

just normal shots i dont hit punches unless i top the ball
it seems the ball lands at the pin and rolls and i think if i could just atleast stop the ball not nessesarily spin it back i would shoot lower

            Re: backspin

Just to expand on the previous replies a little. Backspin is created by a descending blow on the back of the ball, which causes the backwards rotation, so you need to make sure that with your irons you are not trying to lift the ball or hitting them thin. Essentially you want the feeling that you are "trapping" the ball between clubhead and the turf and the loft of the club will make sure that you get a high ball flight.

To maximise the amount of backspin you need to ensure that:

            1) You hit the ball pretty hard
            2) The grooves of your clubhead are clean
            3) You're using a ball that takes backspin - cheap, distance balls won't

            Hope this helps

I read for backspin, the ball should be further back in your stance, than normal.

                Re: backspin

Be a bit careful with that. With irons your "normal" stance should be one that generates the descending contact on the ball. For me that generally means a little towards my back foot with the short irons, middle of the stance for the medium irons and slightly towards my front foot for long irons. If you find you have to move the ball a long way back in your stance then there may be other swing problems that you need to address.

                  Hi,
                  Is your ball trajectory high???
If it is then maybe you are not generating spin because you are releasing your wrists too early. Makesure that you get the feeling of your hands being ahead of the ball at impact...this will ensure that you get that decending angle into the ball...maximizing compression and spin and also yielding a lowish ball flight
                  tell me if this helps

                    Re: backspin

Actually, Gator, I'm building a set of clubs because I have roughly the same problem.

I bought some high-launch heads (SnakeEyes 600XC) and am matching them up to some low-kickpoint shafts (Raven Platinum SL).

So I figure with a high-launch head, and a high launch shaft, I'm either going to

                    A) Have some clubs that will hold greens better for me, to make up for my sometimes spotty ballstriking, or

                    B) Have clubs that balloon like crazy.

                    I'm hoping for A.

                      Re: backspin

Right now i am spinning the ball so well, from 40 yards today i spun it back 6 foot, and my pitches now take one bounce and spin back 2 inches from where it hits the second time. I now take divots on all my shots, even taking very small ones on chips.

                        Re: backspin

Yesterday, I shot a 6iron from about 170 and the ball had so much spin it span back off the green, I have never actually put that much spin on the ball, but its pretty cool when it happens. Key is to hit down on the ball, even though I cant even put a golf ball in the air right now due to my toe shank, I HATE GOLF RIGHT NOW.
