Re: 3 Iron Stinger (Stock Shot)

Its like any other non standard shot, Ricky, its only as good as the amount of practice time you allocate to it. As a junior you have a fair old time to give so I don't see why you shouldnt try and build it in to your game. I wouldn't recommend it to guys who play inland tree lined courses or guys who dont practice more than a couple of hours a week. Shots like that need a lot of attention cos they are different to the normal grooved full swing.

I get a bit annoyed when the golf magazines come out with the 'Teach yourself Tigers winning shot at the such and such' or 'Punch fade for lower scores' As if the game isnt hard enough for club golfers without encouraging them to play difficult shots that the Pros that play them have to practice half an hour every day. I was reading Golf Monthly and the cover said 'Mental Tips To Boost Your Score' it was the second biggest headline on the cover and of course the mag is covered in cellophane so I cant look inside to check. I buy the mag and peel off the '50% ads and no real information despite your £3.50 cover price' protection and flip to the page noted in the contents. What do I find? One page with 5 short paragraphs on the same tip maybe 30 words a paragraph on average. And of course at the bottom of the page theres a website address for the guy doing the tipping's company. Basically they have put a cover headline on for a glorified advert. Anyone else come across this kind of stuff and as tired of it as me?

Can anyone explain what the Stinger shot is and how it's played. He used this shot of the 1st tee at St Andrews but I'm not really sure what it is.

Its just when he keeps the ball really low. A punch shot. good for links golf or into wind etc. As mizuno said, not the best idea to try it unless you got time to practise it or need for it at your golf course. I dont bother with it, i hit driver nearly every par 4 and par 5. Unless i get bored and just hit 2 seven irons or sumin

As stated, it's a low flying shot (aka a punch). It's played back in your stance (towards your rear foot). This effectively delofts the club. There's 3 methods to handling this shot (that will go right as the clubface hasn't had a chance to fully shut). Either aim more left of target, or you can close the clubface some at address so that it will be square at impact. The third option is to keep the clubface square, and strengthen your grip which will promote the club closing faster through impact.

Yesterday when i was at the range, i worked on the punch shot because it was windy as i'll get. I took four irons and finished low, releasing early and it produced a good shot that landed about 175 and rolled another 20 on the range. Good shot for the wind and bone dry fairways

It is also a good shot if you need to get the ball to travel a long distance under the tree branches above.

But don't try it on a par 3. You'll end up long. (and right - don't ask how I know).

Ricky- you say you have to hit down hard- Tiger may be able to do this but its often easier to swing slower.
You're trying to keep the ball low under the wind so you actually want less spin and swinging sloiwer and checking the follow through helps with this-
St Andrews is my home course and its a jey shot in any links golfers bag

By the way- its a shame they arent here thisweek it was blowing a gale today in comparison!
