  • Swing problems

    Hi all,

I have been having major consistency problems with my game for about a year now. I am currently off a handicap of 6 but I could shoot anything from 75-90 at the minute.

I started off with quite a loopy swing, due to taking the club away too far on the inside and then having to come over the top on the way down to correct it. I have looked at numerous golf articles to try and find the solution for the correct backswing sequence but everything I try goes wrong. I think my takeaway is ok but that's when it starts to go wrong. When I try to set my wrists about halfway back, I always fan the club open leading to massive amount of distance and shots being blocked to the right.

Can someone please talk me through the backswing, and the correct motion of getting the club on plane and then to the top.

    Re: Swing problems

If this is the same as the problem that I used to have then I would recommend Greg's right hand drill. Use the search facility to find it posted here.

In my case my right hand used to pivot side to side rather than just up and down during the backswing causing me to wrap the clubhead around my body. If I was playing well enough to get it back on plane during the downswing then I would hit the ball massive distances with a nice draw but inevitably I had problems with both blocking the ball and hooking the ball as my right wrist was far too active.

Check it out and see if it helps.

Thanks. Will search for it and give it a try this afternoon. I'll let you know how it goes.

        Re: Swing problems

Ive seen an acticle that deals with this on the golf channel.
Try doing the opposite. Loop your swing the other way take it away on the outside and loop back into the inside.
I wouldn't nessasarly take it to the course, but its a good drill to sense the feeling of coming back to impact from a slightly inside path.

I would amagine this will feel really odd. But the Pro's work with this method

        cheers John

^ My pro mentioned this to me as well - à la Jim Furyk. It really helped for a while (then, like most golf 'fixes' I started overdoing it).

But it certainly helped when I had trouble coming from the inside.

            Cheers guys.

I tried the right hand drill yesterday and took it onto the course. It seemed to work well with numerous drives hit with a perfect draw. However sometimes I overdid it and I hit a hook. I will stick with it and keep practising.

              Re: Swing problems

STOP. You are too mechanical at the moment. Go out to the range and swing, attempt to get some feel into your swing.

If you are coming over the top I have a great drill for you.

It is called the low to high drill.

Align yourself properly to a target. Drop your right foot back (behind you). This promotes an in to out swing path. As the club is travelling through the impact area feel your forearms rotating, feel the club closing through the impact area. You will start to draw the ball. This will cure your slice.
