  • Body position at the end of downswing

    When I see pros on TV or when I see their pictures in magazines, I have noticed that at the finish of their downswing not only is their chest open and facing the target but their body is completely straight (vertical). With my swing I have noticed that though my chest is open and facing the target, my body is not always 100% vertical. The upper part of my body is slightly tilted towards the right side.

    1. Is this a problem? Does it indicate that I am doing something wrong in my swing (like placing the ball further away from the body at address than what I should be, etc?).

    2. If this is an issue, any suggestions on how to rectify it?

    If you're leaning towards the right side, you could be swinging too hard, or your weight might be too far forward at address. I know that both of those have caused me to step out of my swing on occasion - and I usually hit short because of it. So to remedy, I try to feel my weight in the middle of my feet (or even near my heels) before I swing. When I do, I end up with a nice swing, and a full, balanced finish.

      Thx, you might be right about the weight being too forward at address. I have a feeling my stance at address should be a bit more upright than what it is right now. Will try to work on it when I am out next.

        Seems to me that in a lot of pictures, at the end of the swing the golfer's body, seen from behind, has the shape of a left parenthesis.

          instead of starting another thread i am posting a second Q here...

          i read somewhere that at the top of your backswing, the biceps portion of your arm should be perpendicular to the forearm. on looking in the mirror, i notice that the angle between two portions of right my arm is more like 70 degrees. Also, the upper portion of my arm (biceps area) is not exactly parallel to the ground. in my case the elbow is closer tto the ground than the armpit. i tried to see whether i could change this position, but i felt i am maxing out on flexibilty in my current action.

          any thoughts on the positioning of the right arm at the end of the backswing?

                Hi aparhar,

                Yep I believe the ideal position is the "waiter" position. I also have a problem with that as I realised I am doing more of a "chicken wing" position with my right arm. Have been trying to keep my elbow closer to me body, and my swing consistency has definitely improved.

                  Want to see what the take of the pros is on the following...this is regarding the portion of the downswing between the moment of transition from the upswing to the point of contact...

                  on the dowswing just prior to impact i believe it is a good practice to keep the inner portion of right upper arm close to the right side of the body (visualize one of the drills which indicates that at the point of contact the right arms should be positioned like what it is when you are throwing a ball...also shown in the middle picture on the following link...

                  in order to verify whether i am indeed keeping my right upper arm close to the right side of my bdy i try and lightly brush the outside of the right side of my body with the inside of the upper portion of my left arm (hope that makes sense!). my question is what do other folks feel at this point? do you brush the right side of your body lightly, a bit strongly, or do you not touch the right side of your body at all? is brushing the right side of your body slightly a good idea to gauge whether your impact position is correct or not?
