  • Help with long game

I started to play golf about 2 months ago. Lately I have been practising every chance I get. I have figured out how to chip and bump and run, and I just have to work on consistency. My putting has gotten dramatically better, as I can now make 10-15 ft putts and put myself in good position to 2-putt. Yet I am still shooting 66 on a nine hole course.

The problem is that it is taking me 5-7 shots to get into chipping position since I have inconsistency with my driver (which I can only hit 100-150 yards) , and the fact that I just cannot hit an iron more than 30 yds rolling along the ground. Couple this with the fact that I usually find the rough and I have quite a rough time. My short distance on a driver may be partly due to the fact that my clubs are so old that the driver and woods are made out of just that - wood. However, there is no excuse for the irons.

Can someone please tell me what is the proper technique involving clubhead and swing in order to sucessfully hit an iron into the air and for a reasonable distance?

    Any help would be appreciated.

My advice since you are new to the game is take lessons from a pro. This will help your game.

      Re: Help with long game

I to say take a lesson first. I'm still not good at the game but 3 years ago when I started playing I went out to the course twice and shot over 120. I then took a 45 minute lesson and immediately I went out and shot 105 and was hitting my irons straight a lot of the time and in the air almost every time.

Other than that I would say don't try to hit the ball hard. Remember that the club is designed to do the work. At first, swing slow and easy. You're job is to put the clubface of the iron on the ball with a slightly descending blow. It's the job of the iron to hit the ball into the air at a certain trajectory depending on what iron you are hitting. You can even exaggerate the slow easy swing at first just to see what it's like to hit the ball solidly. If you take the exact nice easy swing with each iron, no difference petween your pitching wedge and 3 iron, the ball will go significantly farther with the 3 iron because the loft of the 3 iron will only allow the ball to go so high, therefore going farther in a horizontal direction. Hope this helps.
