  • Distance Discrepancies

I've been playing for about two years so naturally, I'm a high-handicapper. I see myself getting better and better, but it seems my swing speed and distance with short irons don't correlate to those of long irons and woods\driver. I'm capable of hitting a pitching wedge 140 yards (not that I would) and my subsequent short irons (down to the 6) incrementing about 10 yards between each. Anyway, I know technique is most important, but even when I feel I hit, say, my 3-wood clean, it only goes maybe 220. That doesn't seem consistent to my other distances. I don't even own a driver since my experiences with anything so low loft has been nightmarish. My 3-5 irons also stay in the bag. I rely on a 7-wood for 200 yard distances.

In short, I can't hit my longer irons and lower woods very well, and even when I do catch them well, they don't go as far as I think they should. Any swing speed measurer I've used has clocked me at well over 100 mph.

Is a common reason for this an overly steep swing? Any other ideas?

    Re: Distance Discrepancies

i had the same problem several weeks ago, my coach told me it was in my head and technique overly trying to hit the long irons "long" was skeptical, but concentrating on a good shoulder turn back, a straight left arm and the first move in the downswing being a weight shift forward and the most important relaxing has helped tremendously.

I hit my wedge about the same as your 135-140 5 iron around 200 3 iron about 220, am still groving the 3 and 4 but its most likely in your techinique/head.

make sure your also not getting flat with the longer clubs make sure your taking them back above your shoulder blades.

Something that may help is to get a 1 hour lesson and have them film your swing with your wedge and then with your 4 iron and see the differences, it only takes small changes on the long irons to bring them around

    Good Luck

Yeah, I understand that might very well be the case with the longer irons. I do get that negativity in my head thinking about how this is a long iron and they're supposed to be hard to hit, etc.

...but what about my woods? Yesterday, I played a pitch and putt and hit a 52 degree wedge 140 yards pin high (I didnt have my 9 or PW). I don't want to make it a habit out of blasting these short irons, but it's obvious I've got the swing speed to hit the ball far with my other clubs, isn't it? Even if I hit a 3-wood really well and get all of it, it only goes like 220, like I said. That doesn't seem in line to my other distances to me.

Is it possible to be too steep with longer clubs and hit the ball straight (or a little right) but still shorter than you could if your swing was on a shallower plane?
