  • Hitting Fat Shots

I have been playing golf for the past 10 years. Recently i have been playing with the ball position (foward or back) in my stance to try and generate more or less spin depending on the situation. However, after about three weeks of success now I am hitting all of my shots VERY fat. I am not sure what is causing this and whether it is ball position, if i am dropping my back shoulder or some other fault in the take away or downswing.
On another note, i have also moved closer to the ball at address and have a more pronounced knee bend. My posture is generally "shoulders over knees, knees over toes"

Thanks for the advice in advance!

Hmm I dont think you should be moving the ball around in your stance to be honest...
Find a spot that works and stick with it...
You have probably started to sway to get your body into the correct position at impact and now you are having trouble with the timing of your sway.
Get the ball back to a regular position and work on your 3/4 swing ball striking...

thank you, i had a friend who is an assistant pro telling me to move the ball for spin purposes. I am going to stop that now!

Also what do you mean by sway? is that the pivot of the hips or a shift of the hips

Maybe you are just moving it too much, a ball length makes a big difference.
Usually the ball stays where it is and your back foot move closer or further to your front foot, giving the illusion that the ball is moving forward and back in the stance.

yeah, swaying is when you are not turning, you lean back (away from target) on the back swing and then forward on the followthrough.
Its very difficult to time a sway, when you get it wrong its all topped and fat shots...
stick an umbrella in the ground either side of your hips and swing within them...

You probably have a bit of a steeper angle of attack now that you have messed with spin and moving the ball position, and you are probably falling away from your target at impact. Work with a 1/2 swing and build your mechanics back up, slowly coming back to a 3/4, and then on to a full.

Just a thought..suppose everything you're doing is "correct". In your address position w/o a straight left wrist, your club will be set to an artificially lower position then it should be with a lower spine angle. Try not grounding your club at address as you attain your spine angle, but hover it slightly so that during your dynamic swing, the club will assume a more correct impact position, hitting the ball first, then contacting the ground after. The club now has a "chance" to contact the ground latter in the swing and you may not be giving it a chance to hit the ball first. Of course there are a lot of assumptions that everything else is in working order.
