  • Homemade swing aid

I took a skanky old blade 5 iron I had in the garage and a length of concrete reinforcing iron rod that was also in there. I duct-taped the iron rod to the club shaft, from the handle right down to the club head. Voila, a weighted swing trainer club. I didn't weigh it but I'm guessing it weighs 5 pounds.

I took about 10 easy swings with the weighted club. I don't want to strain any joints or tendons and my main goal is to stretch out my swing, getting a higher backswing and finish. Then I took a regular club and took 20-30 full swings, as I do twice every day now. The "real" swings certainly felt different but it'll take time to see whether any real difference when I hit balls.

I just thought I'd share this way to save about $50 on a swing trainer.

I have made a similiar training aid but by using a different method. I also took and old 5 iron and put a hole in the end of the grip at the top. Then I filled the whole club shaft full of BB's. Then I taped the hole back up at the top and there you have a weighted club. THe nice thing about this method is that the weight is uniform, all through the club. Pack them real tight and you don't even hear a BB moving around in there.

You could also remove the grip, stick a rod down the shaft and epoxy it in, then put a new grip on.....

Little tiny metal balls used to shoot out of a BB gun. Usually lead or steel.

I stole my girlfriends aerobic-training wrist weights (2lbs each) and wrapped them round the head and hosel of my 7-iron (attaches with velcro straps).

            Works fine.

Interesting - I went to a sports store today, to purchaed some bbs - it looked like a bottle for $14.95 - wouldn't be nearly sufficent - how many bbs - in terms of $ did it cost you....have you had any problems arise with the bbs...

Any other ideas would be much appreciated! I am thinking of weighting my 5 iron down and then having the club -regripped.

just fill the shaft with sand instead of bbs and epoxy the hole in the end of the grip once it's installed. Also, check the link to my instructions on how to build a weighted club: http://members.shaw.ca/gord962/build/weighted_club.htm

I got a little overboard with the weighted club and had mine end up weighing around 10 pounds...
here's my homemade inside approach...errr whatever it's called. All you need is a coat hanger and pipe insulation; bend hanger to shape attach insulation...stick er' in the ground and wack away.

Now, has the "El Cheapo" inside approach helped your swing any? I want to know before I go to Home Depot for the pipe insulation....

Well, I am a slicer and right off it made me aware my backswing was too "inside" and I was rushing my backswing. It kinda forces me to go low and slow and more straight back with the club, I haven't had much time practicing with it. I still slice...but in my opinion this will help with coming over the top and staying on plane. Don't ask if I'm a 1 or 2 planer...i'm unclear of the difference but from my understanding of the 2 I'm a 2 planer. I've only used with my gap wedge to hit about 30 balls towards my practice green(which isn't growing)...I want to go out to range and hit a few full speed swings with my driver, because the big dog is the one that always runs em to the woods or adjacent fairway.

Man, that's the funniest darn thing I've ever seen, do you actually take that to the driving range? The guys I know would laugh me off the driving range. But if it works I say great idea.

I’m gonna’ make a really expensive ‘Inside Approach’ using some PVC pipe, it should run me about $2.00 since I probably have all the stuff I need sitting around in the garage somewhere.
