  • How to stop left wrist roll ?

    Hi all,

I have always had a tendancy to roll my left wrist going back on the takeaway (I'm RH). This fans the club face open and means I have to close it back on the way down - timing has to be perfect, so obvioulsy a lot of bad shots ( even shanks! ). I did read some place that by keeping your left wrist cupped throughout the swing stops wrist roll, this does seem to work, but I still now and then roll the wrist causing a too much inside swing plane. Anybody got any tips on how to stop rolling the wrist open ?

    Many thanks,
    Steve

Yup, I used to suffer from this one too and know the problems it causes. Like Ricky my solution is to concentrate on using another part of the body to control the early part of the backswing to ensure that the left hand remains passive. In my case I use the shoulders to do this until the club shaft is parallel to the ground; at that point the wrist has to cock in order to ahcieve a full swing. If you think about a smooth, wide tikeaway then this should also help.

Re: How to stop left wrist roll ?

        Thanks all,

I have found that by keeping the LEFT wrist cupped throughout the swing stops me rolling it. I'm sure that the wrist roll will still happen now and then as it does even with the top players, it is just something I have to keep reminding myself not to do, I just think of keeping the left wrist cupped.

Will rolling the left wrist cause the club to come too much on the inside going back ?

I have been plagued with an overswing and feel this happens when I roll my left wrist.

        Kind regards,
        Steve

Should I stop left wrist roll ?

Personally, I'm working on a new one plane baseball-like swing for my irons, reading Hogan again, etc.

And I noticed that rolling the left wrist during the backswing helps alot to find the good path and I'm not struggling at all to close the face on the downswing...

          Strange !?!

Am I on the wrong way here or is it a one-plane/two planes issue ?
