  • Help please Need to reconstruct swing

Ive been playing golf for around 4 years now and am currently 16. I have been only been able to get out maybe once or twice a week, but i feel that i should still be shooting much better then i am now. Last year i could consistenly score in the 80s, and now my scores have rocketed up to the point where sometimes i dont keep score. I understand my swing very well it is just a matter of doing the correct thing which is what i have trouble with. Ok now to my swing, there are so many flaws i dont know where to start. I start the swing way to inside and then get even farther layed off further on in the swing. I also have a very closed clubface on the backswing and when i try not to keep it shut i will open it to much i cant seem to find the median. My downswing is good in terms of planes my only problem was throwing my hips forward, but ive been working on that.
My ball flight is: Low hooks or blocks to the right(because of flat swing plane and shut face), and very inconsistent contact.
If anyone has any drills or comment they would be greatly appreciated. I think i need to simplify my swing by quieting the lower body especially the hips.
    Thanks

    Hi Chris,

Firstly I suggest you work on your takeaway, most bad shots stem from taking the club away incorrectly within the first two feet. Fanning the club face open at the start of the takeaway will create your too much inside swing start, I've suffered from this and occassionaly still do ( see my thread on wrist roll ). Keep your hands quiet ! Try and start the swing with the club face facing the ball for the first 6-inches and then when the club is at waist high, check it is parallel to the ground,I'm assuming at the moment yours will be pointing behind you. Work on this first and hit half shots, a great takeaway makes the swing much easier.

Let us know how you get on.

    Regards,
    Steve

I've seen this before. It's a good news/bad news thing. The good news is this is an effective and efficient way to swing. The bad news is that it won't work for the classic golf swing.

Please define very closed. When the shaft is parallel to the ground, how closed is the clubface? As for your hips, again, not such a bad thing in the classic golf swing, but something will have to give....

Based on your own comments, it sounds like you're trying to swing on one plane. This is NOT the classic golf swing. If you eliminate your hip slide, you should see much improved contact. When you swing, just thing about turning your shoulders around your spine, back and through, nice and easy, tempo tempo, and see what happens.

If, on the other hand, you wish to pursue the classic golf swing, you need to start picking your hands up to stop being laid off at the top. Hands high need to happen all the time - and you have to keep them in front of your body.

Re: Help please Need to reconstruct swing

If you were shooting in your 80's and are struggling this year, I would suggest you see a golf professional to review your setup. It maybe something very simple - grip, ball position posture etc. I would not try to "reconstruct" my swing as 90% of most swing problems occur at address. Good luck.

Thanks guys Im going to start working on my takeaway and not being laid off at the top. I also think it is a good idea to go over the fundamentals like msklar92 said. I think if i keep going out and practicing I will get rid of this hook.
