  • Weight Distribution

I read some comments on this yesterday that I found rather surprising, so I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread.

What is the proper weight distribution in a golf stance?

Some comments I read said it should be more on your back foot to keep you from swaying during the backswing (which is my problem); some people said it should be on your front foot to get you to hit down on the ball. Which is it? There seem to be a lot of varied opinions on this.

    Thanks.

    Re: Weight Distribution

I think it varies, depending on the shot and your swing type.

    For the normal swing:

In a 2 plane swinger, I like to see the weight on the back foot a bit at address.

In a 1 plane swinger, I see best results when the weight stays balanced.

      Re: Weight Distribution

Sorry Ben, but I disagree with having a different weight distribution for the two swing planes. Your weight should only be on your front foot for shots that require 1/2 swing or less. As for a full swing, your weight should be a bit to your back foot, regardless the plane. You should also have a slight spine tilt away from the target. Having your weight on your back foot reduces the tendancy to sway. Also, your lower body should stay as quiet as possible on the backswing, you are only trying to rotate your shoulders. With a spine tilt away from the target, it is very difficult to sway and you get a much better turn (regardless of 1 or 2 swing plane). With the tilt it is also very difficult to not have more weight on your back foot.

I disagree with the spine tilt for the 1 plane swing. Weight centered and straight spine make it much easier to get the club back to the ball squarely. With spine tilt, the hips have to shift forward on the downswing in order to get the club back into place for a descending hit. (This can, of course, is counter-acted by playing the ball further back in the stance).

Your spine should have a tilt as one hand is lower than the other. one shoulder is lower than the other.
