  • Right Knee downswing - Push/slice

I have been struggling with a push slice where I feel that my hips sway to the target. My shoulders feel like they are tilting back, right shoulder lowers, right kee kicks in excessively towards left and the hands get too far forward and I push slice it from there. I have been trying to fix on my own without any luck. The only thing that seems to work is when I set up, I purposely kick my right knee in a pinch towards my left and keep it kicked towards the left throughout the swing. Any thoughts, drills, etc or reasons why this may be helping.

My guess is that if kicking the right knee in fixes it, it's not a sway that's causing it but an insufficient hip rotation. Kicking the right knee in gives the hip a tiny headstart and that's why it works. It's probably as good a fix as any, and I've seen "swing tips" that recommend doing just what you're doing, "cocking" the right knee toward the target a bit. I find that angling the right foot in a bit or just holding it dead square and not letting it flare out at all does the same tng, but that may be because I'm duckfooted to begin with.

Starting the downswing with the right knee (for righties) is definitely a good thing. This is the easiest way to transfer the weight from your back foot to your right foot. It also gets the hips starting the downswing, which you need.

I also tried today to turn my right in at setup. This has also helped. Is this used for swaying?

I think whenever you turn a foot in, it tends to reduce motion in the lower body. I went to the driving range today and brought just one club and experimented some more. I found this to be a good stable stance for me. I'd set up my shot as precisely as possible, feet square to target line, adjust distance from ball, arm position, etc. The very last thing I'd do before swinging was shift my right heel out a bit, no more than an inch. This points my knee toward the target a little, so that when I do my downswing my hip rotates more readily. And the stance feels more stable than when I shift both feet, which I discussed in another thread. I think I'll stick with this for a while. I was pretty satisfied with my practice session.

It helps deter swaying in your backswing which, in turn, helps prevent swaying in your downswing.
