  • Club Turning in hand.

At this point I feel that most of the progress in the last few months has taken a major step back. The great shots ive had with the irons have dissappeared virtually overnight. I dont feel like I changed a thing. Now im experimenting with everything and im pissed. Anyway, the club is turning in my hand on impact. This is annoying and never results in a good shot. What are a few things that cause this and how can I correct it.

    Hi Andy,

Check the clubface at impact.......................video is best.

Also have a look if your wrists are cupped at the top, this will lead you into impact with an open clubface.................every now and then you will catch one near the toe, with an open clubface this will turn the club in your hands.

    Hope this helps

    Ian.

      Re: Club Turning in hand.

One thing I've done with great success is (if you're a right-hander), instead of putting your left thumb directly on top of the club at address, put it off a little to the right side. If you do this and then go through your backswing, you will realize that by having your thumb off to the right a touch at address will result in it being directly under the club at the top. This should give you more control.

Another thing would be to form your grip by placing the grip on the first pads of your pinky and ring finger on your left hand and then wrapping the fingers around the grip. You need the last three fingers on your left hand to have a good solid grip on the club.

Alternately, just try gripping a little tighter with the last three fingers on your left hand. I'm assuming it's coming loose from your left hand on impact.

I've been through this before, and it's something to do with your grip. In the end, I think you'll find that you are holding the club too much in the palm of your left hand.

Try any of these and tell me if they help. I can post a picture later if the descriptions don't make sense to you.

        Re: Club Turning in hand.

I had this problem all the way round the course the other day and it's very frustrating. I'd been hitting very crisply the last time out then this day I was hitting it off low and to the right straight into deep rough and often the club had moved in my hands and finished up closed.

I went to the range the next day and thought about my grip and what fixed it was to have the club more in the fingers of my right hand with the trigger formed between my right index and thumb and a little gap between my right index and right middle finger. The worst thing I think you can do is try to grip harder. Try doing this grip because when I put it in the fingers of my right hand (the middle two fingers are doing the gripping) I found I could lift my right hand index and thumb off the grip and still make a swing without losing pressure on the grip.

It felt strange at first to do the 'trigger' because I normally had the right index flush to the middle finger. What I find helps is to grip the club, do the trigger and then do a couple of waggles and the grip kind of settles into your right hand's middle two fingers and when it goes into the right place it feels very comfortable and secure yet you feel like you aren't even gripping it.

          Re: Club Turning in hand.

Thanks for the advice so far. Making a trigger with the right and keeping the left thumb off of the top of the club are helping. I got in front of a mirror for the first time today and I noticed that my swing plane was way too flat. At the first swing checkpoint (club parallel to ground) the club was way too far inside the target line. Ive focused on swinging steeper on the backswing instead of trying to make the adjustment on the way down. I guess a flat swing plane and thinking hit down on the ball dont mix. Its led me to an outside in path. Im striking the ball well again. The club has only turned a time or two out of a hundred or so balls.

              Re: Club Turning in hand.

I used to grip the club too tight and Ive loosened my hold but my right hand seems to move after impact on follow through and it feels like the club turns in my hand. Often it appears closed with R hand sliding to the right. I see this when I pull or pull hook iron shots and I find clubface closed when I bring it back to re-address position. I went outside and practiced holding the club in middle two fingers of R hand more and R thumb wraps L thumb with L forefinger in more of the trigger position,( its seems to go there without trying). After a few practice swings I noticed clubface didnt appear to be as closed after follow through. But I notice Im holding a little too tight with this subtle change. This maybe be the grip tip that I need too. Thanks.

It's the right finger and right thumb that are to be 'triggered' (if your a right-handed golfer that is). The left thumb and index shouldn't be triggered, they should look like this: http://www.golf-tuition-online.com/h...es/prod011.jpg

Yes, I meant the R forefinger being the trigger one. Thanks.
