    Re: Keeping head steady

I wouldn't worry about keeping it perfectly still - nobody, besides perhaps Sam Torrence, does that - but I would say moving it 5 inches is extreme. I would even suspect you would have to move your body laterally as well to get your head to move 5 inches. This could bring swaying into the equation, hence the inconsistent strikes?

If you have someone you practice with, have them hold the grip end of the club so it's just above the top of your head (they will obviously be holding the clubhead end near their head as well, so the club is parallel to the ground). Then swing. You (and your partner) will be able to tell just how much you're moving your head. Tiger's dad did this with him when he was a kid, and in later years as well when he started doing it again.

Also, this is simplicity at it's finest, but when I get going bad, it's usually partly due to swaying. I find that by really focusing on keeping my eye on the ball for as long as I can, it reduces my tendency to move laterally.

There's my 2 cents, as they say.

Hi, Well Rick,I suspect you have too much lateral shift on your back swing and sometimes you have trouble getting weight on to left side on down swing .On the back swing try to feel you are swinging as though your hips are in a barrel.Concentrate on this feeling and you should see an improvement. Best of luck.

Try starting your swing with your weight about 70% on your right foot to start and leaninga away from the target. This is something I suffer through quite frequently. This is one of the first things I go back to so I can bet myself back on track.

I have to agree as well that its not critical to keep your head absolutely still. The important things to me are:

1 - The head should not move up or down and should stay at the same level.
2 - The head can sway back but shouldnt be in front of the ball at impact. In other words, keep head behind ball at impact.

5 inch is a little too much but a couple of inches shouldnt be a problem.

As for being too much on the right side, perhaps you can try this:

On the backswing, make sure that you feel like the weight never goes over your right knee. It should be more between inside your right foot. A good feeling is to feel like you are turning against your right leg as building up resistance there will automatically cause your weight to transfer to your left side on the down swing.

          Hope this helps!
