  • Push Slice.. Need Help!

I have been having “PUSH SLICE” problem the day I started to play golf 4 years ago, and recently the problem has been getting more severe and frustrated. There are days that I can swing like a Pro on the range and all of a sudden I can “completely” lose my swing and only producing those ugly PUSH SLICE shots. This only happens to my irons and it doesn’t happen to my driver though. I am getting extremely frustrated about this.

I have read lots of comments regarding to the PUSH SLICE and have a fairly good understanding of swing technique. I believe I am definitely swing in-to-out path coz the ball simply travels right and further right. I am 28 years old and have a pretty good flexibility of my hip.

Below are the areas I have already addressed:

    1)Stronger Grip

    2)Spine angle at address

3)Ball position slight further to my left foot

4)Left foot set up perpendicular to ball to restrict my lower body movement. (Instead of pointing to the first base)

    Questions:

What other areas should I address? Here are the areas I could think of could cause my slicing despite those I have already addressed.

1)Grip pressure (1-10, on which scale shall I apply? I am hold the clubs pretty tight at the moment)

2)Right forearm to get out of "perpendicular" too soon on the downswing?

3)I can sense myself lost my spine angle position and my hands are still behind and have very hard time turn my hand over. (almost sense that I cannot make my hand turn over at all)

Any suggestions will greatly appreciate!!!! Thanks in advanced.

    Re: Push Slice.. Need Help!

Well, a push slice is indicative of a better than hacker average swing path, but an extremely open clubface.

I say extremely, because most people with a push are releasing the club late, (which tries to close it unsuccessfully), but come from the inside.

I used to suffer from a serious push-slice with an agressive swing - I'd choke the club, and wouldn't release it. So, it would be way, way open at impact, and not roll through the impact zone. This launches the club through the impact zone imparting too much slice spin on the ball (although, to me, any is too much!) So, I'd have what you have - a shot that starts right, then curls right some more.

The answer? Dead hands throughout the swing. No more slices. In fact, because I was compensating with a ridiculously strong grip, I started hooking right away.

So: Kill your hands, and set your grip back to neutral to slightly strong, and see what happens.

      Dear Chiwahoo,

You are talking to a guy who suffered the whole season with the affliction you are talking about.

Please read my comments on this on the thread entitled "Greg Norman's The Secret".

One thing I suggest you try right up front: Stand farther away from the ball!!

When I moved farther away from the ball, I really started noticing a difference. When the ball is too close, it will cause you to shank or hit a push slice and it's easy to miss it. You may gradually start getting it closer and closer.

Like I said, in addition to this, read the other thead and see what you think.

        Re: Push Slice.. Need Help!

I will do an experiment this coming days about lighting the grip pressure ( I currently grip my clubes pretty hard)... I will pay attention to the location of my ball .. maybe I do place it too close to my body.

        Thanks for the response.

          Re: Push Slice.. Need Help!

Would it be possible to post a video of your swing up? You can try different things in but it would be much better if we could look to see what may be the exact cause of your push slice.

I am an avid fan in recording your own swing. Without seeing what is wrong will be very hard for yourself (and others ofcourse) to visualize what the problem is and how to cure it.

            Re: Push Slice.. Need Help!

I only have a clip of my normal good swing (not the one with PUSH SLICE). I checked my set up last night and seems to me I was a little bit too close to my ball. I think the clip shows I am slightly close to the ball as well. I need to do an experiment on the range.

My push slice problem has been on and off since day one. It only happens to my iron though. It rarely happen to my woods. I am looking for a way to make myself consistent and hopfully eliminate the push slice completely. It drove me nuts is that I can feel I hit the ball so well for a few weeks and all of a sudden one ugly "push slice" comes back and I feel like I lost my swing completely.

For some reason the website won't allow my attachment even though it is a valid file extension.

Thanks very much for the advice though.

              Re: Push Slice.. Need Help!

I've been trying to cure my PUSH SLICE for 10 years.

It's very frustrating and annoying. When I'm practising I can hit 2 good shots and then the next will finish 5 to 10 yards right. When I look at the club head I can see it's twisted open just a little bit.

              I've tried everything.

                Re: Push Slice.. Need Help!

Here is an update for my “PUSH SLICE” issue.

I have determined the reason causing “PUSH SLICE” is – Swing in to out with a club face open. There are multiple reasons causing this, and my conclusion is that my lower body is way too active. I am either sliding my lower body sliding forward during downswing or my hip turns way too fast , which sequentially causing that “PUSH SLICE” thing.

I have watched the president cup the past weekend and I specifically paid attention to all the pros and their lower bodies movement. Almost all of them are started with their hands first and their lower bodies were maintaining very quietly, particular Trevor Immeman. I can clearly saw his hands come down half way before his hip starts turning.

I also tried to hit the “PUSH SLICE” in purpose… and I concluded my lower body was wide open or slide forward causing my hand trapped or my hands keep coming down without turning over.

I will try to remind myself now to make sure the hands start first and then the lower body.

Hopefully, I can really get rid of this most UGLIEST golf shot.
