  • Right arm action

Has anyone felt as if the right arm action is like skimming a rock across water?
I tried this yesterday at the range and it really helped.

    MSKLAR92,

I must agree that is an excellent way of describing the downswing.

You are of course on to a winner.

Indeed. I've never thought of it that way but now it has opened up a lot of ideas in my newbie mind. Skipping rocks involves hip action and shoulder turn too.

        Here's a saying

If you skim a rock, you will not come over the top!!

So, when's the book coming out? With all the gizmos I see on the Golf Channel, I hope I see you on there with some space age "training stone" along with the book to provide the secret to the perfect swing. I'd buy 2

I like that description. I'm currently working on bringing the right elbow into my body and maintaining the right wrist angle for maximum impact..

Skimming a stone and the side throw (baseball) are Hogans analogies in 5 Lessons ... He probably nicked them from somewhere else mind. I like to feel the distance between the right wrist and the right shoulder remain the same from the top of the backswing to as far into the downswing as possible. There's no way i can keep that angle at impact even if I tried.

That is still bar none the best 7 bucks I ever spent on my golf game. That and Harvey Penick's Little Red Book are absolutely priceless in my mind.

                    Re: Right arm action

Sounds like a gem! Need to clarify one thing though. I find that now I am using my right hand to control the swing, pumping the hands down and swinging the shaft on plane. Probably an old (controversial) topic, but should I really let my right hand take over so much control of the downswing??

I like the concept of thinking of skimming the rock when you don't have a golf club in your hands - I think it gives you a good feeling for what you should be doing with your right arm as well as your body. But yes, with a club in your hands it does tend to give too much control to the right hand.

The thing I concentrate on achieves the same result, but with leaving the hand out of it. When you get to the top of your backswing, have your first move be the return of your right elbow to your body.

Give it a try, it's been magic for me.

For those doing the two-plane swing, I think the first action would be to "pump down" so the hands go back to the "slot", and then you do the skimming the rock action? Is this generally the way people see it?
