  • Golf injury...

Hey guys. New to golf, ..about 3 months or so. Lately I've been hitting a lot,...almost 4 days last week at the range. Anyway, I noticed a bit last week a slight chest ache when I hit the sack at night , but thought nothing of it. Sports aches are nothing new to me. But I swung at the range recently and kind of twinged my real left shoulder a bit. Not an impact injury in the sense that I remember one specific swing. So I hit a few more and on my last swing ( a 70% 7 iron... ) I felt something pop in my lower neck. It was pretty painful. It didn't knock me out,...but it felt more like an injury than just hurting myself. It was pretty bad that night but I iced it and then showered hot. Took a bunch of advil and it was OK. Its still lingering but is becoming less of an issue each day.

Being new to the game...is it common to hurt your neck/back like this? Its strange because I was warmed up and I did strech. Maybe I just over did it by hitting for several days? (I must have hit 300 balls over 3 days...)Does anyone know what might have happened? Will this stay with me like other nagging sports injuries, or in golf that's less likely with a recovery rest approach?

    Thanks!

    Re: Golf injury...

Definatly something you have to have looked at...immediatly. Cyropractor first. You might have missaligned disks from all the new twisting/turning.

Your neck can take a while to getting used to the full range of motion. So be careful to stretch easily at warmup, and relax after.

The back also takes the same kind of beating, especially the lower if you are adding a lot of tourque in the takaway like we all want for max distances.

I had a car accident 6 years ago (not too bad, but broke my finger and knee was pretty sore after - thank God for airbags). 3 years after that my neck was really killing me (just out of the blue). Went to the Cyro and he said 3 of my disks were out of alignment and was probably caused origionally by the accident and over time just got worse and worse until it finally hit the nerve.

One visit under the rack solved the pain, realigned the disks and was right as rain.

    So go....NOW!

I second that - chiropractor, and pronto. Ask around if anyone you know knows a good one. You will be AMAZED what a good chiropractor can do. I had a pretty nice little back injury myself last year (my first year), and I doctor would tell me to take pain meds, anti-inflamatories, etc. Chiropractor took x-rays, twisted me this way and that, and viola.

Seriously, get yourself to a chiropractor, the sooner the better.

And P.S. If I were you I wouldn't swing another golf club until you've seen one. Trust me on this one.
