  • Hit my woods Great, irons terrible, help!

For about the last 30 days I have been having the same trouble and can't seem to find a fix. I am a LH golfer (9 handicap) I hit my tee ball and fairway woods great, fairly long, with a slight fade. If all I had to do was hit drivers and fairway woods I'd be scratch. My problems start when I have to hit my irons, long, short it is the same problem. I am hitting all of my irons very thin, with a fade. When I do hit a iron semi-solid the contact seems to be near the toe?

    HELP!

    Leftee,

Have a look at your stance, make sure it's not to wide.................if you narrow the stance slightly this will give you a naturally steeper angle into the ball.

    Hope this helps.

I recently started on my 4 hybrid, 4 wood and driver. Got to the point where I am making great contact with them. But it seems to have taken a toll on my iron shots subsequently. Longer irons are still ok, but connection with the 7i to wedges are not as crisp and far as before.... Any advice?

      Thanks!

        Hi Simon,

Other than ball position I use one swing for all, of course the plane becomes flater with the long irons and woods......................but the priciple is the same, there is in my opinion a missconception between different clubs especially the driver.

Your swing should not change only the ball position for a driver you can play this right off your left toe if that suits and tilt back a little to ensure a slight upward blow................but the swing remains the same.

Check you ball position for a 9 iron dead centre of your stance should be fine and moving the ball one width forward for every club. for wedges it depends on the shot, back for low and spin, forward for a floater.

Learning one swing is hard enough...............!!

        Hope this helps

Hi Ian, perhaps here's where I need some pointers. With my irons, I usually take my arms up high so it definitely doesn't feel connected to my chest.

With the woods (driver included), I changed to a stronger grip and started the takeaway with my left hand, keeping it very straight and stiff (although I know it only feels that way as you can see from my swing video, it's actually not that straight afterall heh). So in this way, I think I feel that my left arm is more connected to my chest and I am probably taking the take on a flatter plane.

My gosh, could I actually be using a 2PS for my irons and a 1PS for my woods?

            Hi Simon,

Yes you need to learn to swing on plane, the takeaway if the first part, get that right and the rest is easy.

Other than the takeaway you should no be concerned with anything else, you plane changes with every club, the longer the club the flater the swing plane.

I suggest you go back to your very basics with grip, alinement, ball position, then start with the takeaway................take the club back to 9 o clock the shaft should be inline with your toes and the clubface pointing to the sky or slightly to the ground for perfection.

Once you are comfortable with this use it for all your clubs, it only my opinion but I would not even consider looking at an artical that plays with manipulating you swing plane.............of course there are two swing planes......Personal preference based on swing type and stature determins this................short people tend to be flater that tall people.

I suggest you don't concern yourself with different planes just work on your own.

Re: Hit my woods Great, irons terrible, help!

I didn't intentionally change my swing, but it just came naturally. The stronger grip, the stiffer left hand, the flatter takeaway... Only then was I able to get solid contact with the woods. Specifically, I know that I was not lifting my hands so high, so on hindsight it seems like I having been swinging two-plane with my irons and one-plane with my woods?

Ian, you have seen my driver swing. Does that look like a 1PS or a 2PS or something in between? I know you don't want me to think in terms of planes but I guess I'm getting a bit confused now and I really dunno how to go about converging both swings with the woods and irons into one common swing? Should my iron grip become stronger to follow my wood, or should my wood grip become more neutral to follow my iron

                Simon,

If you go the the 'Golf Lessons' section at this site and watch Gregs swing with a driver and the normal lob shot you will note that both swings are identical other than the driver is slightly longer due to the length of the club.

Take a note of the shoulders and how the hands remain in front of his chest all the way through the swing.

Ball position is the only thing that changes.

Thanks Ian, I am going to go out today and try and swing every club like it is my driver swing, I'll let you know what happens. I know when I swing my driver and fairway woods I don't think about much other than making solid contact...when I get an iron in my hand I start thinking swing plane, hand position, etc. Maybe my bad iron play has been caused by me trying to "seer" my irons to the target instead of just swinging.

Hi lefty, I too had this problem. The answer for me was simple(it took years for me to figure out) is to turn back over the right hip with woods and turn back over the left hip with the shorter irons. Hope this helps.
