  • Hitting through the ball....

This is related to the 1st topic i posted which as yet hasnt been replied to, but it is connected. On the golf course i tend to 'chicken out' on some shots which results in an open club face occassionally and a shot that goes left.

Subconsiously i think im worried on the course of hitting it left and that means im not fully committing to some swings and of course the ball goes right.

Are there any drills out there to help with this problem? Something that will get me swinging fully through the ball and fully releasing the club head and the right side of my body.

Maybe i havent diagnosed the problem correctly so any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks ill certainly give that a try tommorow, although on the range the problem isnt as pronounced, i get the feeling sometimes when im on the course that im so worried about pulling to ball left i chicken out during the swing and as i said im sometimes not releasing the clubhead enough.

Doing what you suggest certainly allows me to turn through the ball easier and i guess some alone time on the course just practising really releasing the club through the ball will help.

Do you know any drills that help the right arm during the swing getting it used to doing what it should?

      Re: Hitting through the ball....

sorry right handed, and i feel my poor shots are a result of me not fully committing to the shot which means im not fully releasing the club head which means on my poor shots the club face is open and the ball goes right.

Again i 'feel' as if my right side isnt committing fully on these bad shots as part of me is afraid of hitting the ball left, this mainly happens on the course when i seem to be inhabited in my swing.

Interesting links Golfone... So to see if I got this right, we should start the downswing literally down, try to being the club on-plane as soon as possible? The pumping down refer to the right hand/elbow coming down instead of the plane angle?

            Alias,

Have a look at Gregs right hand drill, once you almost rotate 180 degrees into impact then there is no time to quit on the shot because the later the hit obviously the less time to quit.

It sound like a simple case of mentally preparing yourself for each shot, when you get to your ball make sure you have taken all aspects of the shot into account, get yourself completely ready for each shot, once you are confident in what you are going to do with the ball the more committed you will become.

sometimes the only reason for a bad shot is lack of thought put into the shot, notice how many practice swings a pro has when he's under a tree, you have to make sure you know what you want to achieve.

            Hope this helps

            Ian.

Is the right hand supposed to stay in this position after impact?

                Not at all,

once you achive this impact position you will natually release through shot, if you try this position for the first time you will feel a little out of control at impact because you will be rotating the body right through the shot.

                  Ian.

Thanks Ian i think your right that most of the problem is psychological. On the range when your not dictated by a target so much i feel much more freedom to swing through the ball, on the course maybe theres another hole to the left or OB and mentally i sometimes chicken out resulting in an open clubface and a shot that goes right. As i mentioned in the first post ive only recently re-started playing on the course and i think i need more experience in this environment so that i feel confident to fully commit to the shot without fear.

As i also mentioned on another thread ive recently changed clubs and the new ones are significently heavier than those i was used to, so i guess this will affect my release and timing as im now swinging a heavier club through the ball, and that will require more effort than im used to to square the club face.

At the moment im focussing on a shortened follow through and that helps me really release the club head.
