  • Bad Back = Improved results!

Four days before I went on my annual golfing week to Scotland I did my back in and couldn`t play the first day.
I managed to manufacture some sort of swing (it was actually a 45 degree straight pull) and with the help of a load of painkillers I managed to start hitting some good drives by the middle of the week and actually low scored a couple of times.
I had absolutely no choice of swing - I had to stand 45 closed to the target line, aim a bit right and let go with hardly any follow-through, but I was amazed at the purity of strike (and distance) I was getting, I seemed to be hitting the ball "for a long time" as they say and getting great penetration with no deviation even into the wind with a driver, I think I`m right in saying that you can`t get a much better indication of a pure strike than that.
The back has now cleared up (may have been a trapped nerve - it went as suddenly as it came) and back at my home course this morning I shot 79, my best score since a 78 in 1991 (I`ve been averaging 85)
I went back to what I assumed was my normal swing, but playing all those rounds with the injury has introduced a subtle change for the better, though I`m not sure what it is.

I play better when my back is knackered (which happens every other week in my job).

I find that I swing in a more controlled manner and ,as such, the shaft does it's job correctly.

The downside is that I have to use a trolley on the course instead of carrying my bag.

I had another round this morning, went in 5 bunkers (my BIG weakness) and 3-putted twice, but still had an 82 and I have never hit the ball better.
