Smudge, From what I hear you describe, you are having a "ball-striking" problem. Not to worry, we all struggle with it from time to time. Even the best players in the world don't hit it dead in the "screws" every time they swing. Having said that, here is one drill, a boring one, but effective. With a small bucket of balls at the range, take a comfortable mid to low iron (7-8-9) and pick a target. What you're looking for here is a shorter, slower version of your normal swing. Your main focus of this drill is making solid contact, forget about distance! Take a backswing well short of parallel and really focus on striking the ball in the center of the clubface. If you practice this drill with a small bucket....25-30 balls, twice to three times a week, I promise you will see your ball striking improve. It's no fun to perform drills like this, but they are necessary when faced with ball striking problems. I hope this helps your game.
If you want to put more spin on the ball, then the divot will happen before contact.
ehhh I just read this.
the divot should never happen before contact unless you are in a bunker.
In fact the further behind the ball you make contact the more the ball will roll when it lands.
I'm curious, have you gone through Greg's right hand drill? Actually for me, when I started doing that, I was thinking so much about the unhinging of the right wrist to impact, that I kept hitting fat shots. In effect I was kinda like doing a karate chop movement into impact
I think hitting half swings is a very good advice. I would guess that if you do half swings, you will be able to get very good contact. So it's likely that it's the half to full swing portion that causes the fat shots, and yep usually it's because of a raised height, and again a likely cause is the right leg and/or the spine angle straightening.
