  • Different swing with woods and irons

I like my swing with my woods, but I can`t replicate it with my irons -
My woods have nice heavy heads which really promote a smooth swing through the ball, and I`ve bought a set of those Slazenger "iron woods" hoping they would feel the same, but I can`t really feel the weight of the head as much, and so I think I`m hitting at the ball and stopping after impact with hardly any follow-through. The contact just doesn`t feel solid and I get no penetration.
Consequently, though I hit my 3-wood around 230yds, I can barely hit my 5 iron 150yds and not very accurately (due to out to in swingpath)
I`m shooting in the low 80s now and feel that this is the next area I need to sort out as I`ve knocked 10 shots off my average of 6 months ago due to concentrating on the short game.

I always seem to either hitting my Irons really well and struggling a little with my woods or hitting my woods really well and strugling a little with my Irons.

I think that the key to Irons is hitting down on the ball, while Woods is more of a sweeping shot. Though you should not have to make large adjustments between the shots (at least thats what I have been told), the shorter shafts for Irons forces you to stand closer to the ball and should change your swing plane to more of a steeper path, while the Woods is more flat.

I hit down as well as sweep with my irons. I like to sweep with my driver especially. It glides nicely, but im sure you should hit down as well. I agree there shouldn't be any major adjustments. For my driver The set up is different, but the swing is similar to the irons.

The swing for woods and irons in my opinion should be the same. Definitely no major changes. The only thing that is diferent is perhaps the "feel" of the takeaway. With woods and longer irons, I "feel" like I am keeping the club lower to the ground for a slight fraction longer, whereas the mid to short irons, I "feel" like I am picking it up a little faster.

This feeling should already be controlled by the length of the club since a shorter club will make a smaller arc and a longer club will create a larger arc.

I have to agree with Matt,

The swing should be exactly the same with woods and irons, the ball position changes thats all.

It's hard enough learning one swing let alone two.
