When I first started playing golf, I was never really told about the one plane and the two plane swing. I have read information on both but still cant really figure out what I am doing right now? They say that a one plane is flatter and that you are more bent over from the hips than the two plane. I feel like I am quite bent over with my short irons but upright with my driver. for all my clubs, I think I am fairly flat and that confuses me. Which one am I???

A new highlight: Golfing the home course on Christmas Day.
I say it too often: If it's golf club shaped, you can play with it.
For the record, I'm a club doctor, not a swing doctor.

Tough to say without seeing video (or a bunch of freeze frames).
The main thing that differentiates is whether or not you're picking your arms up and keeping them in front of you, or whether you're taking your arms around your body.
The 2PS keeps your arms in front, and the 1PS sends them around your body.
If you're feeling like you're trying to get your hands high, it's a 2PS.

Sure looks one plane to me. The key is that in the down the line shots, your hands move behind your body, instead of staying in front.

Re: Is my swing a one plane or two plane swing?
Judging from the "down the line" video, I would say that you are very close to a 1-plane swing.
The best way, I find, to tell if you are 1 or 2 plane is the arm position at the top of the back swing:
1-plane: lag shoulder (right for you) is not visible because the lead arm (your left arm) blocks the view.
2-plane: lag shoulder is visible because the lead arm is above the lag shoulder.

Re: Is my swing a one plane or two plane swing?
i have'nt got the foggiest what plane i swing, i just set my self up to the ball and let loose, all this talk about what type of swing we have confuses me.
Perhaps i'm stupid, but i dont think so.
The problem with us golfers we are allways looking for something that can knock a couple of shots of our round, some guy comes along and says buy this book or that vid for my "secret" and we fall for it,if it does what it says all well and good,i in common with most golfers have read everything and anything i can to try and improve my game.
The best investment i've made is to have a few lessons of my local pro and then spend time on the driving range the course is'nt the place for practising.
I also take note of where i'm costing myself strokes a couple of months ago it was on my chipping and putting, a couple of hundred balls on the range sorted that out.
Just to say i find this a great site

Re: Is my swing a one plane or two plane swing?
Smudge, I'll largely agree that the plane you swing on doesn't matter.
What does matter, though, is the advice you take for your swing. I went through hell trying to get a two plane swing down (as a natural one planer), taking lessons from a very good 2 plane swing coach. I had it for the most part, but still couldn't dial in consistency. After spending the last half of this season working on the 1PS, my consistency is ridiculous, and my swing is free and easy. This isn't to say I'm ready for the tour (last wednesday I couldn't hit anything but driver - cause: sliding hips, not turning hips), but it's much easier for me to self-diagnose after watching a bit of video, and hitting some practice balls. But I digress. All I'm getting at is that 2plane advice is detrimental to a 1 planer, and vice versa.

Pinyo8,
Definatley a one plane swing, and a very good one so look at something else to work on.
Have you ever had a go on the "explanair"?, if not try and seek one out you should not feel any difference when you use it if you have a true one plane swing.
Two planers feel very flat on takeaway.
Ian.

Re: Is my swing a one plane or two plane swing?
Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies. As I mentioned before, I never heard about the one plane or two plane concepts when I first started playing golf. I just worked on what felt right for me. I am definitely not trying to change anything major with my swing now and am purely looking at things to make it more consistent and something that I can trust. I have alwayed worked on the thing that cmay was saying by trying to make my downswing path the same as my backswing.
From the replies on this thread, it seems that there are two camps here, one who stands by the 1PS or 2PS concepts or people that dont really care about it. I just have to say do what works for you!
Matt
