  • sweeping for short irons

    Hiya,

My playing partner says he uses a sweeping action (as used for driver/woods) for short irons. what would be the result of using this method as opposed to trying to take a divot?

he has a whack it/ whack it mentality!

I think he means he prefers to play the ball forward in his stance and float the ball to the green as apose to playing the ball back in his stance and taking a larger divot creating backspin on the ball.

The result would be a ball that doesn't stop/suck back, due to the lack of compression.

His distances may also be 'out of line' from the rest of his irons (unless he's sweeping them all).

How good is he with his short irons? My natural swing has always been more of a sweep than anything and I've worked hard to eliminate that from my short game as it doesn't work for me at all.
