Rusting my clup

Greetings,

I was just wondering if i shoudl rust my 60 degrees wedge. Its a cheap one anyways. (here is a pic http://www.pgatour.com/story/4172797). what i want to know is if rusting my club will give me any benefits (like more spin) or damage the soles of the club instead. Thanks. Please let me knwo if you need more infomration about my club.

At one time, rusting a club actually gave it more 'bite', imparting more spin. There are those that state that in this day and age with CNC machining, rusting won't provide any more help spinning the ball, it's just a cosmetic thing now.

Unfortunately, I don't have any data to back it up.

Since you say it's a cheap club, why not rust it, and see what happens?

A rusty club face has a greater frictional coefficient than without rust.
Problem is, the rust isn't uniform which could lead to flight inconsisitencies.

Rust on the face of the club makes no difference to the spin. Chromed clubs spin just as well. The finish of a club makes little difference to the spin imparted to the ball. Raw, chrome or black nickel finishes are all a matter of preference from a cosmetic point of view, although the feel you get off each finish is slightly different.

You would be best to try some demo examples of each type of club to find out which you prefer.

You dont mention what finish your cheap club is, if it isn't a raw finish club, rusting it wont actually recreate the feel of a properly rusted club because the underlying finish isnt the same. But as Lowpost says, theres nothing to lose.

The higher the surface roughness, the more spin you get Elkstrom E.A. (1998) Rust has more surface roughness than a conventional finish but its not uniform. Thats why TaylorMade RAC wedges precision milled to try to recreate it.

If you want spin ,practice chips and pitches off a piece of wood.

Forget rusting your club ,it won't make that much difference.

A "nipped" shot will react as quickly as a "rusty" shot.
