I had the same problem. This fixed it:

What I basically focus on is to keep my hands in front of the ball at impact, ie to pull the club through impact. Don't know if that'll make any sense to you, but try that drill. Works like a charm.

For a lower pw I like to play the ball just back of middle of stance and start with 70 percent of my weight on my left foot. I then take a shorter backswing than normal. I feel like my weight stays on my left (front) foot throughout the entire swing. I then like to get after it and take some turf on the target side of the ball. As mentioned in the previous reply it is important to maintain the hands in front of the clubhead relationship at impact in order to "take the ball, then the turf."
      I hope this helps

        Re: Fixing REALLY high shots?

Most high-ball hitters I know are flipping their wrists through impact. This results in a really high ball flight, and in most cases, shorter lengths. The only exception is this one guy I know hits his 6i 190 yards, but still flips his wrists through impact (which adds loft to the club). I'm afraid to see what will happen if he actually stops the wrist flip... he'll be deadly long...

while this will work its more of an adjustment than is needed.
The problem is probably not ball position (assuming the OP hasnt let the ball move forward in their stance?, how are your drives?)
Try playing some 3/4 punch shots with the ball in its normal position, feel that you are hitting down into the ball as if you are trying to keep it under a tree.

Starting with your weight mainly on your front foot and keeping it there is not what you want to be doing for "normal" shots, you will probably end up with a reverse pivot and start chunking it.

Are you sure you're hitting it really high?

If you can, attend a PGA event, and hang out ~ 160 yards from the green. Watch the height on some of the approach shots.

I'm starting to think that maybe people aren't too high, it's that the majority of golfers are too low!

I hit very high myself. I get 135 yards from my PW and more people comment on how high my ball goes than how long.

                Take some lessons!
It will save you hours of tinkering with your swing.
A good pro will spot flaws in no time.

I suffer the same problem however i still out drive my playing partners who have similar handicaps. I am always being stirred up over the height i get. I can knock a ball over a tall gum tree with a six iron when it is only 15-20metres in front of me and my greatest achievement putting a 2 iron over a tree 30 metres in front of me earlier this year. I spent time trying to lower my ball flight, went an saw a pro who tried to lower my ball flight but stuffed my swing completely because i started standing up on the ball and hitting blocks and pull hooks. My advice is if it is not causing you massive problems then dont muck with it (take one more club, who cares its the score that counts not how far you hit it) as you could make things worse. Work with what you have got it actually has its advantages (stopping the ball on hard greens and treating trees with contempt)

It could also be down to your equipment.

Your shafts could be the problem.
Dynamic golds give you a lower ball flight.
