You'll probably be hitting behind the ball because the clubhead passes the line of your arm/hands before impact. Always keep you hands infront of the clubhead throughout the swing. If you keep your hands infront of the ball at impact it virtually assures you will be hitting down on the ball because it slightly delofts the club, which means you will get a better flight on the ball also. I always like to feel I'm sweeping the ball away with my left hand rather than the clubhead. See Greg's right hand drill on this site.

I think "hit down on the ball" can be a misleading instruction, because it implies a different swing. But as I understand it, the swing isn't different, it's the change in the ball position that determines how the club strikes it.

In my own case, if my ball position is about right and I'm still hitting fat and taking a divot behind the ball, it means I'm not extending my arms properly in the swing.
