I am working on my golf swing and right now I am trying to get into three check points and I have a question about it. If I try to attain a certain position at the top it is very hard for me to get there right now, but if I stop halfway in between, at a point where my backswing transitions somewhat, then I can attain a much better position at the top. practice swinging is great, helps ingrain feel in the swing but what about if the swing is broken into a couple components? does it hurt the swing to take a pause at certain spots? can you ingrain muscle memory or whatever it is this way?

Re: practice swings
I worked on my takeaway for months. I would turn my shoulders and hips and move my arms together till my club was hip high I would pause and make sure my club was both paraelle to the ground and my target line. I now have a near perfect takeaway.

Shooting par..........
Personally I don't think it will harm you to stop at certain point in your swing that you are working on, infact I think this can help you get the correct positions.
Just don't make it part of you pre-shot routine when you play...........just swing with a smooth rhythm.

A new highlight: Golfing the home course on Christmas Day.
I say it too often: If it's golf club shaped, you can play with it.
For the record, I'm a club doctor, not a swing doctor.

j/k Ian - I'll agree that a multiple checkpoint system has no place in a pre shot routine, once your swing is down. I used a multiple checkpoint swing when I was still learning the fundamentals, and it helped somewhat (I still would throw them out the window when I swung).
Now I'm down to a single swing thought, and it's usually to correct an error (my favourite right now is to tuck the right elbow).
