  • driving distances

I hear a lot of talk about people hitting 300yrd plus drives.
where i play golf in England at this time of year your ball stops where it lands, now ive measured my average drive which is around 230/240 carry
can any body tell me do they measure there drive by its carry or is by where the ball stops rolling??? NOW LETS BE HONEST !!

Right now in Ireland I often get 280 carry and a total distance of 279.
Is a shovel considered an extra club?

      Re: driving distances

Since I have no real way of measuring carry, I usually include roll.

Now, that said, when it's been wet and my ball has been within 3 yards of its pitch mark, and when it's dry, I'm usually about the same distance (+/- 7-10 yards).

So this would put my carry ~ 260 yards, give or take wind and ground.

Ditto for me - carry's probably about 260-270. One thing I've noticed is that on the courses "we" play, we don't get the 40 yard, 50 yard - sometimes even more - rollout on the fairways like they do on Tour, a la Tig's 378-yard drive this week that bounded down that hill about 80 yards.

With a "normal" roll I'll hit 280-290. Hard fairways I can crack 3 bills.

I include roll. but with my mid irons my ball has a bounce and stop, usally around 1 to 2 metres from the pitch mark. where my short irons the ball in always only a few centre metres from the pitch mark unless it lands on a hill.

Oops I always thought people quote their distances based on the average of hundreds of balls they hit with a given club at the driving range
