  • Need some help with rebuilding swing

I am a 5 handicap and I have worked hard on getting the hooks out of my game. I have now started to block everything or pull hook the ball. I am self taught and I want to know from the pros what swing theories they have. What is the role of the hands. I believe I am getting ahead of the ball at impact. Just a thought though. I want to rebuild my swing and I need some advice, because I am very flexible and get into a lot of trouble with fast hips and hands. I want to know what you think of trying to keep my right elbow close to my hip on the takeaway and downswing?
    Thanks

Re: Need some help with rebuilding swing

I suffer from blocks and hooks and they're closely related. I had a lesson from my local pro recently to straighten me out as I had a nasty block and the main reasons were

    1. I would take the club away too wide, that is my right arm was too straight. I had to let my right elbow fold close into my right side so the club was vertical just past paraellel to the ground and my right arm was connected to my chest. It felt very 'short' but getting into that position was right the pro said. From there just complete the turn and lift

    2. On the way down I would get stuck trying to come too much from the inside. This caused the block. The main reason was I would bump my hips too agressively and 'upwards' which would cause me to come right out of my posture and fall back onto my heels as my back straightened. From there my clubface was way open - block. Had to work making a smoother transition, staying down into the shot and feeling a nice smooth release from inside to square

The reason I hooked was coming over and top and trying to flip the club square with my hands in order to prevent the block. Once i sorted my takeaway and transition the problems just went away

Of course you may weel be doing something entirely different but a visit to a pro in these circumstances is always well worth the 15 quid

Were you hitting everything low until the elbow fix?

I was wondering?????? Has anyone ever came across just trying new things and discovered that if you tuck your right elbow on the takeaway that it keeps your swing on plane better?

well there is the old drill of keeping a head cover or glove tucked under your armpit for a 3/4 swing
Or the Leadbetter version is to stick a ball there and it should only drop out when your hands get past horizontal (I think) havent watched the vid in a while.
Might dig it out again though, Im cutting across everything in an effort to keep a wide turn, Think Im *way* outside on the takeaway = high and ****py.

i have been having same problem for about three months pull hooking or blocking. I was struggling to break ninety off of an 8 handicap. Last week shot 76 simply by tucking a towel under my left armpit while practicing before a round. I did not hit one block all day and hit 11 greens in reg considering i probably have only hit 100 balls in total doing this i am amazed at the speed i am getting results. Now that daylight saving has started in Australia i am looking forward to practising instead of putting the clubs in the shed as i was contemplating a couple of weeks ago.
