  • Making sure I stay down at impact...

I used to have terrible trouble with raising my body in my backswing, mostly straightening my backleg.

I've about got over this problem, but now I seem to be having trouble with not staying down on impact. Are there any tips to make sure I stay down through my swing?

Lifting up at impact is usually caused by your idea of what impact should do to a ball...hit it up, high in the air, and what better way to help then to try to raise up your body's spine angle too...and along with that will come your head's horizontal position. And you know that is bad causing slices and thin tops.

The first step is to rethink the reason why a ball is hit higher then another. Aside from the club choice, it is the angle of attack "down" on the ball, not up. So to help create a steep angle down, use rotating shoulders that allows the trailing shoulder to try to hit down on the ball at imact. This causes you to stay down more all the way through, and traps the ball more on a decending angle. That causes the ball to have lots of spin that cuases it to rise in a curve upwards...basically what you want for an iron's shape.

Trying to use your hands and arms more to generate a steep angle is not my first choice because a lot can go wrong. Once you have a good impact position with the body, that is usually enough to solve the problem. If you want to gain even more hight after that for special shots, then tweeking the arms and hands is ok.

Thanks for that Greg, I'll go out in the back garden in a while and try it out

I'll maybe see if I can sort out a video to upload too...
