  • Left shoulder behind ball

I read that on the backswing the left shoulder should go behind the ball. Does this apply to say even a 7i? When I try to do this I feel like I'm more than just rotating, but also stretching backwards as well. So not sure if this is supposed to be the case or if this tip meant more for the longer clubs? Noticed the pros don't seem to rotate/stretch their bodies that much with the irons - or it just be misleading watching that on TV?

doesnt really apply to you mid and short irons, them you should be centered keeping head still, long irons and woods the ball is farther forward and your sweeping the ball not hitting down so you can turn more and get shoulder behind ball, but the should behind the ball is still for mostly shots with woods off of the tee.

Simon I agree with you and some people will probably say I am wrong but I wouldn't worry too much about getting a super full turn. I you are a good player your turn is probably fine.

Thanks guys for that clarification. I'm always amazed how the pros seem to hit the irons so far and they seem to do it so effortlessly. In fact you hardly see a lot of body rotation and all that, just backswing and whip, the ball goes way high and far. That leads me to believe that clubhead speed and hitting the ball on the sweet spot are probably what differentiates their shots and mine (Note that I'm only referring to the irons when I say they don't seem to have much body movements)
