  • Squaring the club

I'd like to ask Greg about squaring the club at impact. I've been trying out his right hand drill and being wary about "swatting". However, I cannot square the club any other way but to swat! I have found also that if I swat early I'll pull it and if late I'll slice it as Greg says it'll happen. Also is there any way of squaring the club without consciously telling yourself during the right moment of the swing that you must do it or the ball will go every-which way but straight! Grateful for any advice.

If you are having trouble getting the club square, it is usually because you are not making a full rotation of the hips and shoulders prior to impact. If you only rotate the body back to its setup position at the point of impact, then you will be doing 2 bad things:
    1) not getting your full potential of rotational power and
    2) have to use the hands to close the club square which is what the drill is trying to eliviate.
The drill is meant to have you only swing to 1/2 way (where the club is pointing up in the backswing). This allows you to isolate the proper action of the hands. Once you get that down, then increase the backswing slowly until you are hitting at 100%.
If you are having a hard time getting your full rotation prior to impact, there are probably some reasons for that: you need better flexability (see my other drill here to help), or you are only swinging with your arms and hands. Get the hip and shoulder rotation going first from the top and let the arms and hands follow last. This will get you to rotate earlier and get the body in the proper porition for the hands to be able to release in the correct "up/down" motion and not "side/to/side".
