I notice a lot of the pros do that waggle as a pre-shot routine (for the irons). Which part of the swing are they actually trying to rehearse? Some seem to really fan open the club (it looks like a cocking of the right wrist?). I thought the takeaway was supposed to be no-hands, so this rehearsal should then not be for the takeaway, is it?

Re: The waggle
I beleive the waggle is a pre-set for how you want to strike the ball it really has nothink to do with how you take the club back,ie if you want to hit the ball harder your waggle will be more sharpish action, and for a shot you just want to hit nice and smooth then thats how you pr-set it with the waggle. This was somethink that i often wonderd about until a couple of days ago when i read Ben Hogans 5 fundamentals in golf, which incidently most people who have read it regard it as a golfing Bible,i hope this helps, regards

Re: The waggle
Thanks killer for that insight! It really clarifies things up for me, as I have been thinking about that and trying to figure out how that affects my takeaway. Never would I have thought of it the other way - that it's a pre-impact rehearsal! Thanks. I really need to go and get Ben Hogan's book!

Re: The waggle
Apart from the waggle, I also see a lot of pros doing a short takeaway, where they bring the club horizontal but mainly just with the wrists. Is that supposed to promote an early setting of the wrist? That would affected the arc of the swing, if they practise such an early setting of the wrists, right?
