  • Drivers ?

    Hi All,

I am wanting to buy my wife a driver for her birthday - she has Wilson Irons and a Wilson 3 wood. I have looked around and there does not seem to be a great selection for Ladies. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. She is a fairly high handicapper who wants to get more distance off the tee.

    thnx

I think you should look for a large sweet zone in the club face. the larger area makes it easy to hit off the tee. the taylormade 580 has a large sweet zone and they have drop in price now that the r5 and r7 have come out. make sure she does not out drive you hahahahaha

Forgiveness and distance??? Has to be the Callaway 454 or the Ping G5. We've seen big improvements when they're correctly fitted. You can't go wrong with either of them.

As a general rule women do better with more flex in their shaft and more loft.

Getting her fitted for her driver will be much more important than which driver you buy. Spend the money to figure out how much loft she needs, and what flex.

How far does she carry the ball with her current driver? What is her current driver (loft, make, shaft, and flex)?

I second that. When I was buying new clubs a few months ago, it was astonishing to me how 2 different drivers could generate such different stats on the launch monitor. I hit 5 or 6 of the major brands in different loft and flex combinations, and each one resulted in a slightly different launch angle, spin rate, side spin, etc. I would not have bought the Cleveland without seeing the data; probably would have purchased the Callway 454.

I know you probably want to surprise her, but it will be time well spent working with a good fitting pro on the monitor.

Thanks for the advice everybody - I kinda knew that it'd be better to have her fitted than just rushing out and buying one. The selection at our local American Golf store is pretty poor, as are most of the other suppliers we've found. Online stores are better but you'll not get to the chance to try before you buy then....

She currently uses a 3 for driving - it tends to go up in the air and not very far.

"Up and the air, and not very far".

What club does she take to hit a green from 150 yards?

How high does she tee up her ball to hit it with her fairway wood?
