I would say that the caveat is whether or not you go with a modern-loft one iron, or an old-school loft. A modern loft 1 iron would be more like a 3 wood (considering that 3 irons are ~20º, so a 2 iron is ~17º, thus a 1 iron would be ~14º).

To me, when Tiger drops his 2 iron in favour of a 5w, amateurs should take notice.

Here's a hint: there isn't a single player on the PGA Tour or Nationwide tour that carries a 1-iron. Hybrids 1-irons yes, traditional club iron, no.

I am a 3 handicap player and been playing all my life. I have Callaway X-16 Pro Series irons. I got the set with 2-PW. I recently found a 1 iron to match the set and had it set up the same way as the rest of the irons, same shaft, 2 degrees upright etc.

I hit the 1 iron just fine. But, would never take it into competition or play seriously with it. I have a Cleveland 16 deg Halo and a Callaway Heavenwood 14 deg loft. I would use those any time there is something on the line. Far more forgiving. Ball flight is higher too.

There is nothing like a 1 iron struck sweetly... But sweetspot is very tiny and the swing must be really good AND FAST to get anything out of it. And you you need a good or great lie to hit a 1 or 2 iron. Not so with the hybrids. Can hit them off or out of anything.

Unless your swing speed is 105 or more, would not mess with any long iron or hybrid with less than 18 degrees of loft on it.

I bought a Ping 1 iron when I started to play because I could hit my long irons easily but I was horrid with my woods. I have now gotten better with my woods and I don't need my 1-iron anymore.

Hi,

I carry a two iron and find it absolutely fine, perhaps not for a high h/capper, but if you hit the ball ok it's great.

Great off the tee on long par threes 200+

Great when it's windy off the tee or off the fairway into the wind

Great on very tight tee shots on par 4s 5s etc

Also once you have confidence with a 2 iron the the 3/4 irons become very useable clubs indeed.

My advice would be to try one first, you may be suprised they are not that difficult to hit.

Curly1889 - there is no real need to have a 1 iron any more. I used to love mine about 10 years ago but now the ball goes so far that a 2 iron is more than enough. I broke out my old 1 iron the other day for fun and because my course is very windy. I was amazed how far i could hit it but some of my miss hits were awful. I have 2 iron, 15 degree hybrid and a 3 wood and between them i cover all bases and take out one depending on the course i am playing. Investing in decent cavity back 2 iron (which is much easier to hit from both tee and fairway) would be a better move IMHO.

One thing I have to say about long irons and hybrids is that a 1, 2 or 3 iron is much easier to work the ball and to hit low than the hybrids. Thats why I am having a hard time giving up my 3 iron.

I end up in the trees often enough to justify its existance.

One "hybrid" club that I can keep down is the Mizuno fli hi. It will go high with a regular swing but can keep it down in windy conditions- best of both worlds I guess.

And, it is most certainly true that a mis hit with a long iron, especially a blade is not only an ugly shot but it hurts the hands too... Hit a 1 or 2 iron on a cold day and toe it and see what I mean.

i love my 3 hybrid iron, can creame the ball and work it well, its also a 'piece of **** walmart special'

im thinking about getting this 1-4 hybrid set and not worry about a 3 or 5 wood

When teeing off I perfer my 1 iron over my 3 wood. I can drive it 235 metres.

I posed that very question here, some time ago. I bought a 1 Iron on sale for about $25.00 - just for the heck of it. I have a high HC, but I hit my long irons much better than my short-irons. I use the I Iron without reservation - and you might want to try one for the novelty.

With my Irons, I do not complete the body pivot (this is something I am trying to rectify this winter) - so I don't get the distance from my irons that I ought to.

However, the last game I played I was about 183 from the pin. I ususally hit my 1 Iron 183 feet - I landed on the greeen close to the pin - it was the last whole for the game - and a teriffic feeling!

back in the good old days when I lived in England, there was a guy at our golf club who had nothing else but Irons in his bag, played realy well hdc of +5. We used to call him the "Iron Man". He could hit a wood to save his life, but the irons, wow!
