    Re: swing speed

A good golf swing usually helps, along with a ton of strength, and great flexibility.

That said, we'd have to see your swing before we could analyze any potential distance-robbing problems.

Hitting the sweetspot consistently will give you good distance, guaranteed.

I don't think that speed is all there is to hit long. I find that when my club face and arms, hipps, and shoulders meet the ball at the same time the ball just leaves the club face like a rocket. I am at about 80% of my full speed. the sweet spot does most of the work. sounds nice to but i am no pro, so go see one.

        Hi Killer,

There is a pumping drill which works quite well, get to the top of you backswing and start down, stop halfway down into impact and go back up, do this serveal times then hit the ball with one of the down pumps.

Have a read of the attachment it may help.

        Hope this helps

Im going to post a story from Roger Gunn (I hope thats OK Mods?) .. taken from another forum. Explains in clear detail about how learning to completely remove tension (powerless arms) and giving up control of the clubhead is the number one clubhead speed builder for most average players (myself included)

          --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Greetings everyone! I thought this real-life story might shed a little more light on getting more clubhead speed. I hope it helps!

I was contacted by a fellow that has seen me in the past for some lessons. Nice guy who has just turned 76 years old. He's a very good athlete and hates the fact that he's losing his distance. We should all be so lucky!

Anyway, I told him that I would rather do the lesson at a friend's pro shop that has a Golf Achiever swing analysis system. If we were going to work on him hitting the ball farther, I wanted to get an objective analysis as to whether we were making any progress or not.

After warming up, he hit a group of seven irons. Nice motion (he used to be a five), 3/4 swing, straight left arm, looked super. His average swing speed was 54 MPH, with the highest recorded at 57.

I said to him, "Okay, now that we have a reading, I want you to do something for me: I want you to take your wrists and turn them into two noodles. I want you to hold onto it with enough grip pressure to not let the club go flying, but keep your wrists as soft as possible.

We were off to a good start. The average swing speed went to 57, with the high being 59. Next step: I now told him, "Okay, I now want you to feel the same softness in your arms, shoulders, and legs. You are now a big noodle, soft as can be. Even if your left arm breaks, I want you to be as soft and loose as possible." Average swing speed went to 59 MPH, with the high being 61. (I was thrilled).

Now it was time for the icing on the cake: I told him," Now, from that big and "noodly" backswing, I want you to go at it about as strong as you can. Without tightening our shoulders, arms, or wrists, I want you to get a feeling of going at it very strong with your body, weight shift and turn, from the top of that good backswing." Swing speeed average was now 61, with the high being 63.

He said that he would be happy with simply hitting it one or two clubs longer, and there it was! Were both thrilled. The driver was about 20-25 yards longer as well. Mission accomplished.

Folks, the dynamics of creating speed in a swing are very similar to that of cracking a whip. If the process is going to be nearly the same, then we need to be built the same! A whip has a very loose end. Our wrists need to be loose as can be to create the same process.

          I hope that helps!

            Re: swing speed

Good post pearn. That was almost my exact answer to his question. First of all try to be relaxed with a loose grip. One thing I would add would be to make sure the club is not back in the palms but in the fingers.

              Re: swing speed

This is exactly what I have been working on... I used to hit it longer. But then to make a long story short, I started rebuilding my swing. My swing is much better but slower.

All the technicals involved caused me to tense up. Without realizing it, I had tensed myself up- especially in the wrists to control the club position through the backswing.

I have added quite a bit of speed by loosening grip pressure and relieving tension in arms, shoulders as well.

It takes some getting used to; club feels out of control at first.... but it is like a whip- the release has to happen naturally at impact.
