Be interested to hear from others thier views on the downswing arc

My pro has been working with me on shallowing my downswing arc. I have an arms led transition as many of you which he says is fine but have a tendency to swing the club down too steeply in a V shape where I pull the handle of the club straight down at the ball. This has led to my random bad shot, the push or block where the club gets stuck behind me.

He (the pro) has had me put a tee in the end of the club and from the top feel as though im pushing the club behind me as I start the downswing. To achieve this motion I feel like the distance between my right hand and right shoulder increases as I start the downswing

This straightens the right arm which he says builds much more extension in the downswing and a wider more circular arc. Now I thought this was casting but he is telling me that as long as I retain the angle between my wrist and the clubshaft this move is fine. He also stated this gave my hips more time to clear

The proof is always in the results and right enough I was killing it when I got this right (going to need some work to grain it in). Indeed when he put the speed monitor thing on my SS went up by 10MPH

Anyone else out there feel they have a wider downswing arc and how do you ratify this with keeping the 'lag'

Heres some supporting materal that he's had me read

    Hi pnearn,

Your pro is correct, by shallowing the club on the downswing you have much greater extention through the ball.

If you look at Sergio for instance he has the most shallowing I have ever seen, from the top he drops the head behind him, but most importantly he still keeps the hands out in front of his chest, or he would come from inside and have the same problems as you and me.

It's a risky thing to work on in my opinion, because with non naturals like us we work on something then go to far and have to work back the other way, by shallowing to much you can cause serious swing problems.

I work on reflection, as I drop down to the ball make sure that the club head travells through the hands.

    Good Luck

    Ian.

What do you mean exactly by that Ian?

Yes the new feeling is very different right now but it does feel much more extended at the start of the downswing but its a balance between lag and casting Im striving for , but I know that must be better than the steep V shape I tend to get into

It seems like most all pros have a bent right arm at impact.

Trying to straighten your right arm from the top seems as if it promotes a straight right arm at impact. Is this correct to say that this method should be a straight right arm at impact?

For me its more the feeling of the right arm straightening gradually from the top of the swing, by getting distance between the right hand and right shoulder from the top, thus creating good width on the downswing. As I said when I executed this right I was hitting it better

Learning is about extreme opposite feelings. What feels like casting to me is probably much more on plane downswing as Im used to coming down so steep

            Hi Pnearn,

I have explained many time that we are all different at learning, I should have explained myself better, when I say reflection I mean looking at your reflection in a large window, for me I use a large door at home................as I drop the club down I make sure the clubhead cuts my hands in half in the reflection.....then I know I am on the correct plane.

We all learn different, I would never have a lesson without a video, because someone telling me to do something has no effect at all, I need to see myself to change, so I describe everything by visual aid.

              Pnearn,

Checkout this link to Sergio, notice the shallowing in the 4th frame, and how far behing the clubhead is in the 5th.

Looks at bit extreme. He's position at the top seems way too flat. Having said that, I think Jim Furyk has the opposite habit. He seems to steepen his swing when he reaches the top - anybody noticed that?

Safe to say these are not exactly swings we should base our lessons on?
